Baseball takes series from St. Thomas

Richard Sullivan struck out seven and scattered six hits as the SCAD baseball team opened its Florida Sun schedule with a 9-3 victory over St. Thomas University Feb. 15 in Garden City.

Matt Cox (2-for-5 with 2 RBI), Patrick Braswell (2-for-3), Michael Imbriale and Mike Hines (2-for-5) accounted for four runs in the first inning.

The Bees scored in the second on a Stewart double and a two-run Cox single in the fifth.

Sullivan, who has struck out 32 in 30 innings while walking six, improved to 3-1.

SCAD (12-3 overall, 2-1 FSC) and St. Thomas split a Feb. 16 doubleheader. The Bees won the opener 3-1, while the Bobcats took the nightcap 11-3.

In the first game, SCAD jumped ahead on back-to-back doubles by Stewart and Braswell. Scott Shambaugh’s double in the second scored Hines. In the sixth, Braswell, who led off with a double to right, scored.

Adam Honeycutt picked up his fourth save of the season, allowing one hit in three innings of relief and striking out three.

In the first inning of the nightcap, Braswell singled home Stewart. SCAD scored in the sixth on an RBI double by Braswell and a single by Shambaugh.
