Athlete Feats highlights for Feb. 22By Michael MacEachern and Edward DeVita Published: Friday, February 22, 2008 Swimming teams capture six titles at championship The women’s swimming team won two events Feb. 16, the final day of the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship in Charlotte, N.C. SCAD captured six titles at the meet. The women, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, finished third out of 12 teams with 603.5 points. In the men’s competition, the Bees, ranked No. 4 in the NAIA, came in fourth with 363 points. Stephanie McNicol earned a victory and set a meet record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17:27.59). In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Lizzie Harr, Megan Lawless, Tori Aboud and Cassie Dixon teamed up for a win (3:34.32). The men captured a win Feb. 15 when Vitali Pushkar-Verbitsky set a meet-record time (49:13) in the 100-yard butterfly. Rachel Fritts captured the same event for the women (58.63). On Feb. 14, the women won two events: the 200-yard freestyle relay, which Harr, Lawless, Aboud and Dixon finished in a BGMC-record time (1:37.16), and the 500-yard freestyle, which McNicol won (5:03.09). Also Feb. 14, Danny Recordon finished the 50-yard freestyle in sixth place (20.80) with the best time registered in the NAIA this season. Nat Emmett set a college record with his fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.16). Men’s tennis edges Flagler The third-ranked SCAD men’s tennis team defeated Flagler College 5-4 in a non-conference match Feb. 15 in St. Augustine, Fla. SCAD raised its record to 3-0. Mihai Draganescu clinched the match with 6-4 and 6-2 wins at No. 5 singles. Women’s tennis downs Flagler The sixth-ranked women’s tennis team defeated Flagler 5-1 in a non-conference match Feb. 15 in St. Augustine, Fla. SCAD improved to 3-0. Hillary and Courtney Collins led SCAD to an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Stephanie Gula and Erica Cardenas supplied the 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles. Irina Pljusznyin won a three-set match at No. 1 singles. Romina Mrochen and Hillary Collins won in straight sets at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, respectively, to seal the win. Men’s basketball edges St. Thomas Chas Johnson led three players in double figures as SCAD earned a 61-58 Florida Sun men’s basketball victory over St. Thomas Feb. 16 in Miami. The Bees improved to 12-16 overall and 5-7 in the conference. Johnson led the Bees with 14 points off the bench. Eze Andrews recorded a double double with 12 points and 14 rebounds (12 in the first half), while Ron Kus added 11. Men’s lacrosse drops two matches The men’s lacrosse team fell 16-4 to St. Leo University Feb. 16 in St. Leo, Fla., a day after a 13-6 loss to Rollins College. Against St. Leo, the Bees got a pair of goals from Stewart Yost and scoring strikes from E.A. Spencer Gray and Mac Sidwell-Graff. Women’s lacrosse splits opening matches The women’s lacrosse team split two-games Feb. 16 in Tallahassee, Fla. The Bees fell to Florida State University 18-3 in the season opener before winning by forfeit over Tulane University. Against the Seminoles, the Bees picked up goals from Nicole Mula, Amy Hedgepeth and Kim Caltagirone. |
