Women’s basketball splits two games

Webber International University held on for an 86-79 Florida Sun victory over SCAD Feb. 9 in Savannah.

The Bees dropped to 17-9 and 7-4.

Janay Wilson led the Bees with a career-high 20 points. Teammate Katie Stover added a double double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Krystle Remigio contributed 13 points, and Dakota Whitney grabbed 10 points, 10 assists, nine rebounds and seven steals.

Kaona McGowan’s two free throws with 1:53 remaining gave the SCAD the lead for good as the Bees held on for a 57-56 decision over Warner Southern College Feb. 8.

Whitney added 15 points, six assists and four steals, and Stover contributed 11 rebounds and eight points.


Men’s basketball wins one, loses one
Embry-Riddle University won a 75-63 Florida Sun contest against the Bees Feb. 9 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

SCAD fell to 11-15 and 4-6 in league play.

The Bees were led by Xavier Blain-Cruz, who tallied all of his 13 points in the second half. Kevin Polit and Nick Maloy each finished with 10 points for the Bees.

Ron Kus scored 18 points — 11 in the second half — as SCAD upset 13th-ranked Warner Southern 72-62 in a Florida Sun contest Feb. 6.

Eze Andrews recorded a double double for the Bees with 15 points and 10 rebounds to go along with his four blocked shots. Tim Stammen finished with 13 points.


Women’s golf opens spring season with seventh-place finish
The women’s golf team finished in a tie for seventh place in the first tournament of the spring season, the 2008 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women’s Golf Intercollegiate Feb. 10 in Kiawah Island, S.C.

The 12th-ranked Bees shot a final round of 330 on the par-72, 5,800-yard layout to finish the 36-hole event with a score of 658.

Katina Ruest led the SCAD contingent with a top-10 performance, carding a 77 to finish in a tie for ninth at 152. Hallie Cochran finished tied for 33rd place at 165 after an 85, and Greta Sullivan shot her second consecutive 84 to finish tied for 40th at 168. Amelie Mogard shot an 84 to finish tied for 57th place at 173. Ashley Austin shot a 99 and finished tied for 78th at 194.


Softball opens season with win over Brewton-Parker
The eighth-ranked softball team opened up the 2008 season with a 5-2 and 4-2 sweep over Brewton-Parker College Feb. 9 in Mount Vernon.

After allowing a two-run homer early in the game, SCAD starter Meghan Temple (1-0) allowed just one hit during the remainder of the game and struck out seven.

SCAD was led offensively by Kayla Tom, who went 3-for-4, and Brittany Kelley, who went 2-for-4; each drove in two runs for the Bees.

In the nightcap, the Bees secured the win with a three-run sixth inning. Kristen Curette, who improved to 1-0 as she pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief, hit a home run over the left-center field wall. The Bees added runs on an RBI double by Courtney Mienkina, who went 3-for-3, and an RBI single by Carleigh Shannon.


Men’s tennis starts season with two wins
The third-ranked men’s tennis team easily defeated No. 10 Webber International 8-1 in a Florida Sun match Feb. 10.

The Bees, who also defeated Warner Southern 9-0 Feb. 9, improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Florida Sun.


Women’s tennis team wins two matches
The No. 6-ranked women’s tennis team came away with an 8-1 Florida Sun victory over No. 24 Webber International Feb. 10.

The Bees, who also defeated Warner Southern 9-0 Feb. 9, improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Florida Sun.
