Pope signs contract with the YankeesBy Michael MacEachern Published: Friday, July 13, 2007 Former SCAD baseball player Ryan Pope has signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees. Pope will be working out of the Yankees’ complex in Tampa, Fla., and hasn’t yet been assigned to one of New York’s minor-league affiliates. On June 7, the Yankees picked Pope in the third round of the 2007 Major League Baseball first-year player draft. He became the first SCAD player in the baseball program’s 17-year history chosen in the MLB draft. He joins former SCAD pitcher Charlie Zink in professional baseball. Zink, who signed a free-agent contract with the Boston Red Sox in 2002, has split time with Class AA Portland (Maine) and Class AAA Pawtucket (R.I.) this year. Pope, who was the second player selected from an NAIA institution in the 2007 draft, became SCAD’s first NAIA All-American in baseball this season. He is the highest-ever drafted player among the current members in the Florida Sun Conference and holds college career records in games started (42), complete games (32), innings pitched (289.1), victories (24), strikeouts (284) and earned run average (2.36). Kelly selected as PING NAIA All-American Savannah College of Art and Design men’s golfer Colin Kelly has been named to his second All-America team this season. The Golf Coaches Association of America selected him for the PING NAIA All-America Third Team. He also was named to the NAIA All-America Second Team in May. Kelly is the first underclassman in the history of the men’s golf program to be named to an All-America team, and is the first player since SCAD rejoined the NAIA in 2003. Clint Colbert was named to the NCAA Division III All-America teams in 2001 and 2002. Kelly, who was named the Florida Sun Conference Golfer of the Year, recorded the second lowest single-season scoring average this year — 74.22 strokes in 23 rounds for the Bees. An All-NAIA Region XIV performer, he equaled the college’s 18-hole record of 65 at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate in March. Kelly, who finished in the top 20 in eight of the 10 tournaments he played this season, helped the Bees earn an at-large berth to the NAIA National Championship for the second time in the past three years.
