Men’s basketball defeats Methodist College

Keith Davis recorded his eighth double double of the season and fifth in the past six games as he scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the Savannah College of Art and Design men’s basketball team defeated Methodist College 72-66 at the Savannah Civic Center Jan. 7.

The Bees have won five consecutive games and improved to 10-5 while the Monarchs fell to 4-7.

SCAD scored the first six points of the game and led by as many as 16 points (32-16) in the first half on a layup by Labeeb Abdullah with 3:56 remaining. Abdullah nearly finished with his own double double as he scored 14 points, dished out nine assists and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Bees pushed their lead out to 17 points (53-36) on a layup by Adam Thomason with 10:25 remaining in the game before the Monarchs mounted their comeback.

Methodist used a 12-3 run late in the game to pull within six points (68-62) on a Ron Brown jumper with 1:15 left. The Bees were able to hold off the Monarchs’ uprising as they hit 4-of-6 free throws in the final 48 seconds.

Paul Otim and Thomason each added 10 points for the Bees. Eugene Grant led the Monarchs with 13 points while Brown added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Tournament Most Valuable Player Keith Davis scored 27 points and pulled down 12 rebounds as the team defeated Edgewood College 69-60 Jan. 5 to capture the Edgewood College Jubilee Tournament in Madison, Wis.

The Bees, who have won four consecutive games, improved to 9-5 as they captured their third tournament in as many tries this season.

Davis went 7-of-10 from the floor and 13-of-18 from the free throw line as he tied his season high for points. Davis also earned the tournament’s Mr. Rebound Award as he collected 23 rebounds in the tournament, including 12 in the title game. It was Davis’ seventh double double of the season. Kyle Jones also earned the tournament’s Assist Award with 10 and Wesley Adams earned the tournament’s Hustle Award.

Labeeb Abdullah was named to the All-Tournament Team as he scored 19 points against Edgewood, whose players were limited to 33.3 percent shooting from the field (18-of-54).

Adams scored 18 points to lead a balanced attack as SCAD defeated MacMurray College 81-61 Jan. 4 to advance to the title game.

The Bees jumped out to a 47-28 lead at the half as they limited MacMurray to 34.5 shooting from the field (10-of-29) and never looked back.

Abdullah added 14 points for the Bees while Davis and Stu Melvin each added 10. Davis also pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Derek Suttles led MacMurray with 14 points while Derek James added 11.


Emory edges SCAD women 56-52
The Emory University women’s basketball team held off the SCAD Bees 56-52 Jan. 7 at the Savannah Civic Center.

The Eagles improved to 6-1 while the Bees dropped their second consecutive game and fell to 8-7. SCAD returns to action Jan. 10 when they travel to Newport News, Va., for a 6 p.m. contest at The Apprentice School.

The lead see-sawed back and forth in the first half as neither team enjoyed more than a five-point cushion and Emory took a 23-22 lead at the half.

Both teams traded leads back and forth for the first six minutes of the second half before Emory scored seven consecutive points to take a 39-33 lead on a jumper by Mackenzie Bisset with 11:12 remaining in the game. SCAD then scored the next five points to trail by a point (39-38) on a layup by Laura Hagwood with 9:09 left.

Emory used an 8-2 run later in the half to open some breathing run with an eight-point lead (53-45) with 2:36 remaining. The Bees got as close as four points (56-52) with three seconds remaining on a Kerise Delcoure free throw, but that would be as close as SCAD would get.

Hagwood led the Bees with 21 points, six rebounds and four assists. Nicole Moody scored nine points and added a team-high eight rebounds.

William Smith College’s Pria Young scored 19 points to lead five players in double figures as the Herons broke open a close game in the second half to record an 88-63 decision over the SCAD women’s basketball team Jan. 3 on the campus of the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas.

The Bees fell to 8-6. SCAD returns to action Jan. 10 with a 6 p.m. contest at the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va.

William Smith, who scored 33 points off 25 SCAD turnovers, led the Bees 40-34 at the half before outscoring SCAD 48-29 in the second half. The Herons hit 47.5 percent (19-of-40) from the field in the final 20 minutes, including 5-of-6 from the 3-point line.

Monique Lewis led the Bees with 15 points and six steals while Nicole Moody added 14 points and seven rebounds. Laura Hagwood also finished in double figures with 10 points.

Moody’s 22 points and career-high 18 rebounds led four SCAD players in double figures as the Bees pulled away in the second half to defeat the University of Dallas 96-86 Jan. 2.

SCAD broke open a tied game (41-41) at the half as they shot 55.3 percent (26-of-47) from the floor in the game’s final 20 minutes while holding Dallas to 35.9 percent (14-of-39). The Bees, who have been outrebounded by nearly eight a game, held a 56-41 advantage on the glass.

Moody’s double double for SCAD was her fourth of the season and second in as many games. Lewis added 17 points for the Bees while Becki Tower added 16 points, five assists and three blocks. Rachel Breiner also finished in double figures for SCAD with a career-high 15 points.

Dallas had five of the six players they played finish in double figures. Amanda Bludworth led the Crusaders with 27 points.
