An unusual beach visitor garnered a lot of attention at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s Sand Arts Festival, held on Tybee Island’s North Beach May 12.

Bobaface, a bearded dragon, soaked up rays on a towel while serving as the model for a sand sculpture created by students Dominic Prestera, Heidi Arnhold, Hannah Davis and Greg Davis. In addition, admirers took pictures of Bobaface posing with Prestera, and the reptile spent part of the day lounging on top of the sculpture. To keep him comfortable and healthy, his owners also supplied him with water and a shady spot in case he became too warm.

Prestera and Arnhold, both seniors in the sequential art department, said they acquired the lizard when he was a baby. He is now a year old, with an expected lifespan of approximately a decade. They also have a pet chameleon.

Bearded dragons are native to Australia and New Guinea. They prefer hot, arid, semi-desert environments, so a sandy hangout on a sunny day was perfect for Bobaface.
