Local beach clean-ups inspired by World Oceans Day

June 8 has been designated World Oceans Day, and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and Clean Coast are recognizing the day by sponsoring two local clean-up efforts.

Dubbed the “Sweep the Reef, Sweep the Beach World Oceans Day 2005 Clean Up,” the events take place on two consecutive weekends.

On June 11 and 12, scuba divers from area clubs will visit the sanctuary, where they will receive special training to learn how to clean up the reefs without damaging coral and other invertebrates. They will then spend the weekend clearing fishing gear and other debris from the area.

On June 18, Clean Coast will provide transportation for volunteers interested in cleaning up the beach at the Ossabaw Island State Heritage Preserve. In addition, a representative from the Gray’s Reef sanctuary will speak to volunteers.

According to a press release issued by the sanctuary, “The goal of the joint clean-up is to remind people that trash and debris are damaging to both the marine and coastal environments and to point out that our actions on shore — even well inland — impact the ocean.”

World Oceans Day has been celebrated for the decade since its inception at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Clean Coast is a volunteer organization that conducts monthly cleanups on barrier islands and coastal marshes and provides community education.
