SCAD presents advertising awards showBy: Ally Hughes Published: Friday, January 25, 2008 The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the 2008 SCADDY Awards Jan. 26, 5:30 p.m., at the Lucas Theatre, 32 Abercorn St. The SCADDY Awards competition, sponsored by the advertising design department, challenged SCAD students as well as 2006-07 graduates independently or collaboratively to produce advertisements in 16 categories, including packaging, direct marketing, non-traditional advertising and magazine advertising. A panel of advertising professionals, including best-selling author and copywriter Luke Sullivan, narrowed the submissions to 160 finalists. Sullivan also handpicked an entry to receive a Special Judges Award for Copywriting. “The SCAD student work featured in this year’s SCADDY Awards is very impressive,” said advertising design chair Stephen Hall. “The professionals who judged the entries … were knocked out by the quality of the work they saw. I was, too. It’s as good as much of the professional work being done today — maybe better. I think you’ll be impressed when you step into the Lucas Theatre on Saturday.” The competition, open to SCAD’s nearly 9,000 students, celebrates collaborations between hundreds of emerging writers, art directors, graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, filmmakers, animators and others. “The SCADDY Awards are the high point of the year for the advertising design department, and this year will be better than ever. We have a bigger, better venue in the Lucas Theatre, and attendees will be able to see all of the finalists’ work on display during the reception. It’s going to be a big night,” said Hall. SCADDY Award-winning work is entered into the ADDY Awards, the advertising industry’s largest and most respected international competition, and can advance from local to regional and national competitions. Last year’s SCADDY winners earned Silver, Gold and Best of Show ADDY Awards at the local level, and Silver and Gold ADDY Awards at the regional and national levels. Tickets to the SCADDY Awards cost $5 each and can be purchased through the SCAD box office, 216 E. Broughton St., by phone at (912) 525-5050 or online. For more information, visit the Web site. Hughes is interim assistant director of communications. |
