Three alumni from the Savannah College of Art and Design’s film and television program were named label winners of the Radar Awards 2008 Music Video Competition for their music video of Kylie Minogue’s single, “Slow.” Minogue and her label, Parlaphone, chose the video by Terry Duthu (B.F.A., 2007), Trey Hock (M.F.A., 2006) and Kevin Phillips (B.F.A., 2006) for the honor.

The Radar competition’s purpose is to discover and promote new music video director talent. For the contest, aspiring filmmakers created a video for a song by one of 16 participating artists. The musicians and their labels selected the winning entries based on cinematography, editing, overall structure, relevance to track and originality.

Duthu, Hock and Phillips’ video has moved on to the first public voting portion of the competition, sponsored by the Abbey Road label. The trio will attend an award ceremony at the London Short Film Festival Jan. 12 to receive their label award and learn if their video won the popular vote as well.

Prizes, which will be announced at the ceremony, range from £1,000 to music video commissions and mentoring opportunities with production companies such as Black Dog, Draw Pictures and TBC.

Hock, the video’s producer, said he, Duthu and Phillips created the video for Radar’s competition in the hope of attracting industry and public attention to their work. Duthu and Phillips both served as directors; Phillips also was the director of photography and Duthu was editor.

The video was shot on location in Savannah and featured a cast of primarily SCAD students. The college’s film and television and performing arts programs often collaborate on similar projects.

The group’s online video description reads, “A group of filth-covered men aggressively performs in an apocalyptic wasteland. A living painting, comprised of three women, confront the band and call forth three elementary school girls to dance the band away. The band continues in spite of the girls and the lead singer attacks the painting directly. Though there are casualties on both sides, the front man is not prepared for what majesty he discovers and all are consumed in a flash of light.”

Watch the video and vote.
