Actress presents one-woman play
SAVANNAH — Grace Diaz Tootle stars in the one-woman comedy "Shirley Valentine" by Willy Russell at the Savannah Community Theatre, 2160 E. Victory Drive. Performances are March 15-16, 7:30 p.m., and March 9 and 16, 3 p.m. Tickets are available at the box office and cost $25 for adults; $20 for seniors; $15 for students, children and military and for Sunday matinees; and $10 for Thursday performances. A $1 handling fee is charged for credit card purchases.


First Friday announces folk lineup

Orchestra helps celebrate St. Patrick’s Day
SAVANNAH — As part of the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, Camerata Ireland, a 40-piece chamber orchestra, will perform at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, 50 Diamond Causeway, March 14, 7:30 p.m. Tickets cost $30 and can be purchased at the church. Folk musician offers workshop and concert
SAVANNAH — The Savannah Folk Music Society presents master bluesman and historian Scott Ainslie March 8. He will hold a blues workshop at 3 p.m. and a concert at 7:30 p.m., both at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 Fahm St. The workshop is free and open to the public; concert tickets, which go on sale an hour before the performance, are $10 for the general public, $8 for SFMS members, and $5 for children and students.


High Museum offers film series, other events in March
ATLANTA — The High Museum of Art, 1280 Peachtree St. N.E., is sponsoring two Greek film series, “Passport to Greek Films” through March 29, and “Muses and Mortals, Greek Myths on Film,” March 7-28. All films begin at 8 p.m. in the Rich Theatre. Schedules follow:

March 8 “The Heart of the Beast”
Recently orphaned and just out of university, slacker Stephanos turns to a college friend who has made a life outside the law. The film is directed by and stars Renos Haralambidis.
March 15 “A Touch of Spice” This semi-autobiographical story was written and directed by Tassos Boulmetic and centers on his alter ego, Fanis, who looks back on his life in Turkey.
March 29 “Sugartown: The Bride-
grooms”
This witty documentary introduces viewers to a sleepy Greek village facing a shortage of women. The new mayor, whose platform promised wives and companions for lonely farmers, facilitates a trip to Klin, Russia, where 300 potential brides await the villagers.

"Muses and Mortals: Greek Myths on Film"
March 7 “Orphée” Director Jean Cocteau, an icon of surrealist film, re-imagines the myth of Orpheus. Death’s motorcycle-riding minions have seized Orphée’s wife, and he must travel to the underworld to rescue her.
March 14 “Phaedra” The 1962 film written and directed by Jules Dassin stars his wife and international film star Melina Mercouri. The wife of a shipping tycoon must travel to Paris to retrieve his estranged son.
March 21 “Black Orpheus” In this film by French director Marcel Camus, during Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, a streetcar driver named Orpheus meets Eurydice, a country girl on the run from a homicidal suitor.
March 28 “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” This Coen Brothers film follows three escaped prisoners on their Odyssean adventure through the Depression-era Deep South.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Woodruff Arts Center Box Office, via phone at (404) 733-5000 or online. Admission prices are $5 for the public and $4 for museum members, students and seniors.

The museum also is holding several other events throughout the month:
  • Friday Jazz takes place March 21, 5-10 p.m., and features the Marcus Printup Quartet. A live, costumed model will be available for visitors to draw or sketch during the concert; pencils, paper and drawing boards are provided. Admission is free to museum members and $18 for others.
  • HIGHlights Tours are held Tuesday- Sunday, 1 p.m., and Thursday, 6:30 p.m. Tours are free with museum admission and cover the museum’s permanent collection.
  • Art in the City events take place Thursdays, 5-8 p.m., and include extended gallery hours, tours and lectures; admission is free with museum admission and for museum members. The speaker schedule follows:

Barrel racing Equestrian show benefits nonprofits

SAVANNAH — Members of the SCAD equestrian team will volunteer at the fourth annual Hilton Head/Savannah Equestrian Exposition, a fundraising event for local charitable organizations. The event is open to the public and will be held March 30 at Rose Hill Plantation Equestrian Center, Horse raceslocated on Highway 278 in Bluffton, S.C. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the exposition begins at 12:30 p.m. A variety of equestrian events will be featured. Tickets cost $15 each, and admission is free for children under 12, active-duty military personnel and their dependents.
