Here and there

Savannah College of Art and Design painting professor Linda Cohn first put together “Linda Cohn is Here/ There” as a Presidential Fellowship project for faculty development. Cohn said she considers this work a reflection of her “yearning to change … to experience the far away and the flight itself — a migration of sorts from the here to there.”

Chicago raised and educated, Cohn said her move to Savannah inspired this recent body of work. “The paintings are visual vignettes concerning transit, flux and separation,” she said. “Important to my process is the continual discovery of mark making — pulling and pushing, stopping and going with tighter definitions and looser gestures. The process itself embod[ies] the act and thought and traveling experience.”

Having lived near the Museum and School of the Art Institute of Chicago for most of her life, Cohn credits both institutions as being inspirational to her development as a person and artist. She earned an M.F.A. in painting and an Illinois State Teaching Certificate from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; an M.A. in printmaking and a B.F.A. from Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. Before joining SCAD, she worked as a teacher for the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, the University of Chicago, the Evanston Art Center, Hinsdale Center for the Arts, Chautauqua School of the Arts, the American University in Cairo and the Oxbow School of Painting and Sculpture. She also enjoyed a three-year stint (1994-1997) in Luxor, Egypt, where she lived and worked as an archaeological draftsman for the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. “This experience had a profound impact on my art and exposed me to a fascinating and provocative blend of the ancient and modern,” said Cohn.

“Linda Cohn is Here/There” is on display at Bergen Hall Gallery, 101 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., though May 1. The show is part of the college’s monthly gallery hop, April 4, 5-7 p.m.
