For more than 20 years, Savannah College of Art and Design alumnae Martha Enzmann and Karen McVay Butch have joined both their talent and their friendship to produce costume designs, paintings and installation art. Though their separate approaches are indeed distinct, the two women feel their work is highly compatible. To this end, Enzmann and Butch have created “Me and My Friend,” an exhibition of two- and three-dimensional work existing as a vertical and horizontal integration of space installed on walls, floor and ceiling.

Both highly regarded artists, Enzmann and Butch have used their talents to craft for themselves enviably and artistically successful lives. A resident of Savannah, Butch, who received both M.F.A. and B.F.A. degrees from SCAD, has had four solo shows and countless group shows. Many of Butch’s pieces have been exhibited at college galleries from Savannah to Boston, including SCAD, Armstrong Atlantic State University, Morehead State University, Lees-McRae College, Harvard University and Marywood College. Her multimedia projects have been everywhere from the stage of the Savannah Ballet’s performance of “Petrouchka” to the Erzbishofliches Diozesanmuseum in Cologne, Germany.

Enzmann, who lives in Todd, N.C., and received a B.F.A. from the University of Minnesota and an M.F.A. from SCAD, also has had countless exhibitions. Her multimedia projects include everything from a puppet show in Todd to a workshop-outreach program in Aspen, Colo.

Looking at the résumés of Enzmann and Butch, overlapping exhibitions and locations of multimedia projects jump out from the page. Their longstanding association is immediately apparent. According to the artists, though their approach to painting and sculpture is different, the subject, scale, palette and sensibilities are compatible and that is why they often work together.

The work of Enzmann and Butch steers clear of being too serious or weighty, yet neither is it silly or unimportant. Instead, a balance has been found by both women, in which comfort, nature and playfulness are combined. If anything, a sense of tranquility and equilibrium seems very much at the heart of “Me and My Friend.”

“Me and My Friend” is on display at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., through April 9.
