Quilt council sews up local exhibition
Gallery S.P.A.C.E. features traditional “Crazy Quilts” with a modern twist through Sept. 28. By Ally Hughes Published: Friday, August 17, 2007 Members of the Georgia Quilt Council Inc. are displaying lively examples of the craft movement at the City of Savannah’s Gallery S.P.A.C.E., 9 W. Henry St., through Sept. 28. Their exhibition, “Crazy Quilts for Modern Times,” showcases a collection of contemporary crazy quilts, patchwork quilts consisting of pieces of cloth of various shapes, colors and sizes, sewn together in an irregular pattern. Work on display ranges from traditional, intricate handwork to contemporary interpretations using irregular patchwork and decorative embellishments. Complementing the crazy quilts are other samples from Savannah collections, including full-sized quilts, clothing, hand- and machine-quilted items, and embroidery works. A reception for the artists will be held Aug. 17, 6-8 p.m., and will feature the Palmetto Quilt Guild’s prize quilt, “Big Blue.” On Aug. 24, 7 p.m., quilter Sidney Brand will present a free lecture titled “Color My Quilt.” Finally, quilting demonstrations will take place Sept. 6, 13 and 20 from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. All events are free and open to the public. For more information about the exhibition, lecture or demonstrations, call (912) 651-6782 or visit www.savannahga.gov/arts. Friday, January 5, 2001 - Get your fill of nil
