By Michael MacEachern Freshman Ryan Pope scattered eight hits and struck out four as fifth-seeded Savannah College of Art and Design held on to upset No. 2 seed Flagler College 2-1 May 10 in the first round of the 2005 NAIA Region XIV Baseball Championship, held at Grayson Stadium. The Bees, who were making their first-ever appearance in a postseason baseball tournament, improved to 24-30 and faced No. 3 seed St. Thomas University at 7 p.m. May 11 (results not available at press time). SCAD took a 2-0 lead in the third inning as they took advantage of two errors committed by Flagler. Josh Eastwood started the inning by reaching on a walk by starter Mike Krebs, who only allowed four hits. Eastwood moved to second when the Flagler shortstop dropped the second baseman’s throw on a ground-out by Adam Honeycutt. Both Eastwood and Mike Cahill, who pinch ran for Honeycutt, moved up 90 feet on a sacrifice bunt by Sean Barber. Adam Freeman drove in Eastwood on his single to right field. Cahill also scored on the play when the Flagler first baseman’s throw sailed over the third baseman’s head trying to get Cahill out at third. Flagler, which defeated SCAD three times this season, including twice in its final at bat, mounted a rally in the ninth inning as they put together three hits against Pope (7-7). A single up the middle drove in a run to cut the deficit to 2-1; however, Pope was able to get out of further damage as a Flalger batter grounded out to end the game. Siegel named Reserve National Champion Savannah College of Art and Design equestrian rider Jordan Siegel was named the Reserve National Champion in the Open Fences competition at the 2005 Intercollegiate Horse Show Association National Championship held at the Eden Park Equestrian Center May 5-8 in Sunbury, Ohio. It is the fourth national title in three years for the junior from Flower Mound, Texas. She was Reserve National Champion in Open Flats last season, while she was the National Champion in Open Flats and the Reserve National Champion in Open Fences in 2003. Siegel was one of three SCAD riders competing at nationals. Eleanor Turner competed in the Walk, Trot, Canter competition for the Bees, while Gray Morris competed in the Walk, Trot competition. Both finished just out of the ribbons. More than 7,000 riders from over 300 colleges compete throughout the year to earn a chance to go to nationals. Women’s tennis qualifies for first-ever trip to championship SCAD earned its first-ever trip to the NAIA National Women’s Tennis Championship when the Bees earned one of the 11 at-large berths to the tournament May 9. The Bees, who are ranked No. 10 in the final NAIA Top 25 Rating, are a school-best 15-4 this season after finishing in second place in both the Florida Sun Conference and the NAIA Region XIV in 2005. SCAD will find out May 11 who its first-round opponent will be in the 24-team tournament that will be played May 16-20 at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Ala. “I am extremely proud of these young women,” said head coach Chuck Keenan. “They worked their tails off all year and flat out got it done. They deserve all the credit in the world. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my assistants Maria Primatic and Aaron Lamb — without them this wouldn’t have been possible.” Women’s tennis is the fifth SCAD team to qualify for a NAIA national tournament this season. The volleyball, men and women’s swimming, and women’s golf teams are the other teams to do so for the Bees this year. Women’s golf earns berth to championship SCAD has earned one of the 13 at-large berths for the 11th annual NAIA National Women’s Golf Championship later this month in South Bend, Ind. The Bees, who finished the season ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, will compete against 22 other teams in the 72-hole tournament that will held May 17-20 at the Blackthorn Golf Club. SCAD finished in 13th place at last year’s tournament, held in Daytona Beach, Fla. “We are very excited to be returning to nationals,” said head coach Amanda Workman. “This year’s field is extremely strong, which should make for a competitive four days. The girls have been hard at work since the regional tournament. It will be fun to go up to Indiana and put it all together. “We ended the season ranked 17th, which is our first time to end a year in the top 20,” added Workman. “This is quite an accomplishment for such a young team. With no seniors on the roster this year, I am looking forward to seeing what this strong group can do in the next few years as well.” In nine tournaments this season, the Bees finished in the top 10 in each event. SCAD’s best finish this season has been third place in three different tournaments, including last month’s NAIA Region XIV and Florida Sun Conference Championship in Lake Wales, Fla. Six lacrosse players named to all-conference teams SCAD had six players named to one of the All-Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division B Men’s Teams. Joe Madron was named to the first team defense, while Charles Pate was named to the second team defense. Attack Craig Shaloiko, midfielders Dan Gutt and Pliny Reynolds, and goalie Seth Jones were named to the honorable mention team. Madron, a junior from Silver Springs, Md., and Pate, a freshman from Greenville, S.C., anchored the defense for the Bees that allowed just 7.2 goals per game this season. Gutt, a sophomore from Concord, N.H.; Shaloiko, a junior from Kingston, N.Y.; and Reynolds, a graduate student from Wilmington, Del., all finished among the top 20 scorers in the conference. Gutt finished ninth with 20 goals, while Shaloiko was 11th with 19. Reynolds was 19th with 12 goals and also assisted on 11 others. Jones, a junior from Louisville, Ky., led the SELC with 148 saves this season. SCAD finished its inaugural season in the Southeastern Lacrosse Conference in fifth place in the 13-team division with a 6-4 record. MacEachern is sports information director at SCAD.
