Sand artists prevail against the weather By Sunny Smith Nelson While the official 2005 Savannah College of Art and Design Sand Arts Festival, scheduled 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. May 6 on the North Beach of Tybee Island, was cancelled because of inclement weather, several intrepid students turned out for a special early-bird competition, scheduled 6-8:30 a.m. Several of these students were awarded for their perseverance with a Severe Weather Sand Arts Contest Award.

Third Place: Turtle and Mermaid Nyssa Benthin, animation, Pennington, N.J. Mark Dunn, film and television, Matthews, N.C. Margaret Sharp, sequential art, Bellevue, Wash. The 2005 Sand Arts Festival was hosted by SCAD and was sponsored by the Coca-Cola Co., Cingular Wireless, Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary, and the SCAD sculpture minor and foundation studies department.
