Parking options increase Two more parking lots have become available to SCAD students, faculty and staff during certain hours. The Coastal Georgia Center will allow vehicles with SCAD parking stickers to use its lot adjacent to Turner House, 302 W. Boundary St., from 10 p.m. - 8 a.m. Monday-Friday. The City of Savannah has likewise given permission to park in the Savannah Visitors Center lot in the evenings starting at 6:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, though overnight parking is not permitted. Both lots are free during these hours. During normal business hours in the visitors center lot, the first hour is free, with a charge of $1 for each additional hour. During special events, after-hours parking will not be available for free. SCAD vehicle owners also may park in the Savannah Civic Center lot from 2 p.m. - 6 a.m. for free (after 6 a.m., there is a $3 fee). The college continues to investigate additional parking solutions. Animator to speak May 12 The Savannah College of Art and Design Classical Animation Society and the animation department present Michel Gagne May 12, 9 p.m., at Byte Café, 3515 Montgomery St. Gagne has been a key character animator for producer/director Don Bluth and the primary effects animator on such films as “The Iron Giant,” and he is also a successful illustrator and sequential artist. Admission is free with valid SCAD ID. A bus taking attendees to Montgomery Hall leaves Turner House, 302 W. Boundary St., at 8:30 p.m. and Oglethorpe House, 201 W. Safety in Savannah seminar planned for May 13 A Safety in Savannah seminar for students will be held May 13, 4 p.m., in Café SCAD, 231 W. Boundary St. The seminar will last approximately 30 minutes and will provide students with the tools to help ensure personal safety in Savannah and elsewhere. Speakers are Gene Friedman, director of college security; Geoff Jowett, dean of students; Tamara Knapp-Grosz, director of the Center for Student Counseling and Disability Services; Ron Roberts from the Rape Crisis Center; and Sgt. Mike Wilkins from the violent crimes unit of the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department. A brief question-and-answer session will follow the speakers. Disabilities session to be held May 13 A session titled “Uncovering Hidden Disabilities: A Collaborative Approach” will take place May 13, 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., in Eichberg Hall, 229 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., Room 104. This is part of the quarterly faculty Lunch and Learn Series sponsored by the Center for Student Counseling and Disability Services. The session will explore a collaborative approach to dealing with student disabilities. Topics include legal aspects; anxiety; and eating, mood and neuropsychological disorders. SCAD-Atlanta trip and meeting scheduled An interest meeting for SCAD-Atlanta will be held May 13, 3:30 p.m., in Pepe Hall, 212 W. Taylor St. Savannah College of Art and Design students can get a sneak preview of the facilities with an overnight bus trip to SCAD-Atlanta May 20. Buses will depart from the Weston House parking lot, 231 W. Boundary St., at 9 a.m. After a tour of the facilities, dinner will be provided. Students will view a live simulcast of the Fashion Show at 8 p.m., at which Tom Ford will be presented with the André Leon Talley Lifetime Achievement Award. Students will spend the night in the Spring House, 1470 Spring St., before returning to Savannah May 21. Participation in the trip is free to all current students. Conference deadline approaching The College Art Association’s 94th annual conference is Feb. 22-25 in Boston. Preliminary proposals to session chairs are due May 13. Graduation rehearsal mandatory Students who will have completed all degree requirements between Fall 2004 and Summer 2005 are eligible for the May 28 commencement ceremony. Graduation rehearsal will be held at 2 p.m. May 27 at the Savannah Civic Center in the Martin Luther King Jr. Arena. Rehearsal is mandatory for all participants. Those who do not show up for rehearsal will not be allowed to participate in the ceremony. Those who did not plan to participate in the graduation ceremony but have since changed their minds should contact their graduation auditor. New liberal arts course to be offered Fall 2005 Mathematical Foundations of Art and Design (MATH 202, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3 p.m.) will be offered in Fall 2005. The main purpose of this course is to expand students’ knowledge of mathematics beyond that of elementary algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Students will gain exposure to advanced mathematical concepts and learn how to apply them specifically to major fields of study and various art forms. MATH 100 is the prerequisite for MATH 202. Fill out customer service survey online The information management and technology department invites faculty and staff members to participate in an online customer service survey. IMT will use the results of this survey to measure the effectiveness of its services and to evaluate the needs of the faculty and staff. After logging into MySCAD, click on the My Info tab, then click on “Personal Information” and “Answer a Survey.” The name of the survey will appear as a link. Click on that link to access the survey questions. After completing the survey, click on the “Submit Survey” button. Once a survey has been submitted, it cannot be retrieved. “The information management and technology department will use the results of this survey to measure the effectiveness of services provided and to evaluate the needs of the faculty and staff,” said Robby Knox, director of the computer services division in IMT. Faculty wanted to teach summer workshops Students from around the world will be attending the English as a Second Language department’s five-week Summer Intensive Program July 21 - Aug. 26. This program is designed for students who are looking for a concentrated immersion experience in English. In addition to attending traditional classes, they will visit galleries and museums, collaborate on projects, and attend workshops led by faculty in the art and design departments. Most of the students are interested in attending SCAD in the fall quarter, and some have already been accepted, so this is a good opportunity to acquaint them with various subjects and the professors who teach them. Pro Tools classes to be offered SCAD is a Digidesign Certified Training location, meaning students and industry professionals can take courses in Pro Tools (the industry standard software for sound editing and music recording) that count toward certification as a Certified Pro Tools operator or Pro Tools expert. Pro Tools 101 will be offered June 6-9. There also will be a Pro Tools 201 class offered June 13-16. Enrollment is limited. A $100 nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve a place in the class. The total fee is $575 for matriculating SCAD students and $750 for all others and includes the $100 nonrefundable deposit. The balance is due prior to the first day of class. Provence tours on tap There will be docent-guided educational tours of Provence, France, based from SCAD-Lacoste May 22-29. Tour participants will be housed in the college’s private residence in Lacoste. All meals are included, with evening dining in local restaurants selected for their excellent cuisine. The tour price is $2,395 (this does not include air fare to Marseilles). The fee includes airport pickup/dropoff in Marseilles, lodging, all meals, daily transportation by custom tour bus, faculty docent and venue admittance. Smithfield Cottage posts weekend hours The Graduate Studies Center at Smithfield Cottage Graduate Studies Center, 118 W. Hall St., now has extended hours. Every Saturday and Sunday, Smithfield Cottage will be open 1-5 p.m. for graduate students and their families. The center is located one block from Forsyth Park and is on the college’s South Central “C” bus route. A Chatham Area Transit bus also stops at Barnard and Hall streets. Free parking is available on the street and in the college parking lot at Barnard and Hall streets, adjacent to the cottage. A bike rack is also provided. Security is on site, and a student ID is required for admission. The new hours were added because of graduate student requests for weekend accessibility. Call the Help Desk for A/V assistance The department of information management and technology is now responsible for meeting SCAD audiovisual service needs. Effective immediately, all special event requests that involve audiovisual services, requests for servicing or maintenance of audiovisual equipment, or connectivity issues involving audiovisual equipment and computers should be reported to the Help Desk at (912) 525-4567 or helpdesk@scad.edu. All special event requests must be placed two weeks prior the event. Questions also should be directed to the Help Desk. Faculty handbook posted online The 2005-06 Faculty Handbook has been revised. Section I (Faculty Guidelines) now includes the “Externally Funded Grants and Contracts” policy on pages 10 and 11.
