SCAD announces new administrative appointments By Bruce Chong On May 10, Savannah College of Art and Design President Paula S. Wallace announced the appointment of Andrew W. Fulp as vice president for academic services. Fulp previously served as dean of the School of Communication Arts, and prior to that as chair of graphic design and a graphic design professor. Fulp replaces Jeff Eley, who began teaching at SCAD in 1984. Eley assumed administrative duties in 1997 as director of off-campus programs. He was then promoted to vice president for student services before accepting the position as vice president for academic services, which he held for four years. Eley also has written two books for Design Press, “Savannah Sketchbook” and the college’s 25th anniversary commemorative book, “Making Our Mark.” After more than 20 years at SCAD, Eley decided to return to his first love — teaching — and will rejoin the architectural history faculty this fall. Fulp was appointed dean of the School of Communication Arts in 2002 and has overseen the advertising design, graphic design, illustration, photography and sequential art programs, working with 44 full-time faculty and more than 1,500 students. As professor, chair and dean, Fulp successfully launched the college’s advertising design program; expanded the photography curriculum to include new graduate programs in digital, commercial and documentary photography; and developed graduate degrees and certificate programs online. Fulp also oversaw student development of logos for the United States and the State of Georgia host committees for the G8 Summit held in Savannah and Sea Island in June 2004, and he supervised the annual student production of poster and advertising design for the PGA Legends of Golf tournament held in Savannah every April. Fulp received a Master of Fine Arts degree in graphic design from SCAD and a Bachelor of Communication Arts degree from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Prior to joining SCAD, Fulp was art director at Kennickell Printing Company, senior designer with Meissner Illustration & Design, and owner of Existing Light, a stock photography company. He is a native of Winston-Salem, N.C. Steve Bliss has accepted the position of dean of the School of Communication Arts. Bliss joined the SCAD faculty in 1992 and became chair of the photography department in 2001. During his tenure as chair, the photography department has consistently been one of the five largest majors for graduate and undergraduate students and has earned an international reputation for quality. Bliss holds a master’s degree in photography from Ohio University and a bachelor’s degree in studio art from the University of New Hampshire. Chong is dean of communications at SCAD. |
