By Linda Tierney Food, music and laughter filled Orleans Hall April 28 at the Savannah College of Art and Design’s “Over the Top” Silver Scholarship celebration. The event recognized the good news that the campaign reached its goal and the scholarship is endowed. The campaign included a raffle to win a 1990 BMW 325i black convertible that was donated to SCAD for this scholarship by Critz BMW. Students from the United Student Forum took the lead, selling the raffle tickets and working with all the other student organizations in the college to spread the word and get as much participation as possible. The raffle raised $4,332 and is now fully endowed. “The main goal was to get the scholarship endowed so that, for the entire lifetime of this college, someone will be able to receive the scholarship,” said Stephanie Hurst, USF president. As the night progressed, attendees grew anxious to learn who would win the car. At 10 p.m., silence filled the room as Frances Wong, vice president for admission and student relations, announced Dodie Richardson, a staff member who works at J.O.’s Café, as the winner. The prize for selling the most tickets went to student Ankita Rao, who won an iPod shuffle donated by Circuit City for selling 15 books of raffle tickets. The Silver Scholarship was created by the alumni services department and the USF three years ago as a way for students to help support each other financially and learn more about being philanthropic.
