The Student Media Center held its fifth annual student media awards ceremony on May 6 in the Oglethorpe House ballroom. Beecon, District, The Hive and SCAD Radio used the opportunity to thank students, faculty and staff for their contributions to the student media programs at the college. Staff members who received plaques for their support of student media included Chris Auer, Bruce Chong, Becky Greenspan, Gene Friedman, Brad Grant, Doug Scoggan, Glen Osterberger and Falishia Wilson. The following students were recognized for outstanding service to student media: Q Manning, Adam Gould, Robert Coleman, Kat Savage, Laura Rogers, Jeff Gill, John Merchant and Brooke Slemmer. District Editor in Chief Jessica Clary presented copies of the paper’s Associated Collegiate Press National Newspaper Pacemaker award to Janet Danforth, Matt Terrell, Marc Femenella, Ryan Cole, Colin Smith, Frank Bologna and Elize Rostant. Jennifer Epstein was recognized for her service as president of the college’s chapter of the Society of Collegiate Journalists. Jasem Pirani, Chiaw Pang, Matt Terrell, Scott Salisbury, Elize Rostant, Julia Ritchey, Brooke Slemmer, Jeff Gill and  Krissy Fries were initiated as SJC members. New student media leaders for the 2005-06 academic year were officially introduced. They are Beecon General Manager Q Manning, District Editor in Chief Matt Terrell, The Hive Director Nick Bartone and SCAD Radio General Manager John Baxter.



Sean Palmer won first place in the undergraduate student category of the seventh annual 2005 Art History Paper Competition for his work “Penates and Princeps: The Transformation of Roman Household Religion in the First Century of the Roman Empire.”

A symposium in connection with the competition will be held May 13 at 4 p.m. in the Oglethorpe House ballroom.

Joanna Davidovich won second place for “Broken Eggs, Bolts and Virginity.”

In the graduate category, Sarah Ward won first place for “Hogarth and Goya: Society and Civility Contained in a Madhouse.”

Kristopher M. Young won second place for “Tomato: Reconnecting Signs and Images in a Postmodern World.”



Historic preservation professor Bob Allen has been appointed the SCAD representative to the Coastal Georgia Regional Development Center’s Historic Preservation Advisory Council. In addition, Allen spoke at the Historic Savannah Foundation’s Preservation Week seminar, “Moving Historic Houses,” on May 2, and has been asked to review a book about historic district commissions written by James Recap of the University of Georgia.



Fifth-year architecture student Virginia Bernard presented her thesis, “Savannah Fair Grounds Restoration and Development,” to the State of Georgia Association of Agricultural Fairs and Expositions — a group of 60-65 people — April 29. Bernard spoke about the history of her project, the outline of her program and the project’s new design.



Historic preservation alumna Audra Brecher (M.F.A., 2004) has been selected to participate in the 2005 US/ICOMOS International Summer Intern Program. She will be working at the Documentation Center of the International Council on Monuments and Sites in Paris, France.



Painting alumnus Brett Callero (M.F.A., 2004) was part of the group exhibition “PILEism” at the Heaven Gallery in Chicago. Images from the show can be viewed online at www.pileism.com.



Historic preservation graduate student Megan Harrison earned a summer internship with the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training. She will be concentrating on cemetery preservation.



Interior design professor Margo Jones organized the Georgia Chapter of the International Interior Design Association’s Shadowing project in Atlanta, Hilton Head and Savannah on April 8, 16, 22 and 29. During this project, SCAD interior design students were paired with interior design and architectural professionals for a day of observing and working in their offices.

Jones also participated in a sales training seminar for Master Tile/Intercoastal Tile Distributors April 29 in Orlando, Fla. The seminar, “Selling to the Architectural and Interior Design Community,” was co-sponsored by Crossville Porcelain Tile of Crossville, Tenn. Jones conducted a communication skills workshop for architectural and interior design specifications representatives as well as inside and outside sales and showroom personnel, and spoke on the topic, “Getting the Results You Want: Building Effective Sales Relationships.”
