Fashion show tickets available now Tickets for the 2005 SCAD Fashion Show held May 20, 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Trustees Theater, are available now. Tickets for the 4 p.m. show are free; tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $20. There is a strict limit of four tickets per person. They may be purchased in person with a valid SCAD Card at the Trustees Theater box office, 216 E. Broughton St. The general public may purchase tickets beginning May 2 at 10 a.m. at the Trustees Theater box office or by phone at (912) 525-5050. Vilppu to conduct workshop Artist-in-residence Glenn Vilppu will conduct a workshop for SCAD faculty titled “Innovative Approaches to Teaching Life Drawing,” April 29, 10 a.m., in Anderson Hall, 412 E. Anderson St., Room 202. To register, e-mail professor Jeff Markowsky, jmarkows@scad.edu. Vilppu will compare different approaches to drawing the figure throughout history and examine their effectiveness in contemporary applications. He will also demonstrate the use of a computer drawing tablet and its effectiveness as a teaching tool. Vilppu, a leading draftsman and instructor in drawing and painting, has conducted drawing seminars for major animation studios and published five instructional books on drawing. Grant-writing workshop to be held April 29 The office of faculty development and the Writing Center offer a grant-writing workshop for SCAD faculty members interested in obtaining outside funding for special projects related to individual artistic endeavors and professional development. The workshop is April 29, 1-4 p.m., Jen Library, 201 E. Broughton St., Room 109. The workshop promises to demystify grant-seeking and writing and to highlight a variety of resources and best practices. Space is limited. To reserve a seat, e-mail fconn@scad.edu. Textbook deadline coming soon Textbook adoptions for Fall 2005 are due by May 1. Fulbright interest meeting to be held May 6 A U.S. Fulbright student program interest meeting will be held May 6, noon, at Forsyth Hall, 713 and 715 Barnard St. The U.S. Fulbright student program is designed to give college students with recent Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees opportunities for personal development and international experience. To learn more about the U.S. Fulbright student program and meet members of the Fulbright committee, attend the interest meeting. Game developers share insight On May 6, SCAD and Thomson Course Technology present Game Developers eXchange for the first time. GDX 2005 brings game-industry veterans and experts to SCAD-Atlanta for an all-day event to share their behind-the-scenes knowledge of the game industry. At sessions for attendees, professionals will reveal what goes into developing video games, including game design, art and programming. The conference is free, but space is limited. GDX 2005 will be held at the college’s Atlanta facility, 1600 Peachtree St., 9 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. Transportation will be provided for SCAD faculty, staff and students. Taylor St. Housing is available for Summer 2005 at the Spring House, 1470 Spring St., for $1,770. There is no meal plan requirement at Spring House; however, meals will be available for purchase at the SCAD-Atlanta facility, 1600 Peachtree St. The application deadline for current students is May 27. Conference deadline approaching The College Art Association’s 94th annual conference is Feb. 22-25 in Boston, Mass. Preliminary proposals to session chairs are due May 13. Faculty wanted to teach summer workshops Students from around the world will be attending the English as a Second Language department’s five-week Summer Intensive Program July 21 - Aug. 26. This program is designed for students who are looking for a concentrated immersion experience in English. In addition to attending traditional classes, they will visit galleries and museums, collaborate on projects, and attend workshops led by faculty in the art and design departments. Most of the students are interested in attending SCAD in the fall quarter, and some have already been accepted, so this is a good opportunity to acquaint them with various subjects and the professors who teach them. Pro Tools classes to be offered SCAD is a Digidesign Certified Training location, meaning students and industry professionals can take courses in Pro Tools (the industry standard software for sound editing and music recording) that count toward certification as a Certified Pro Tools operator or Pro Tools expert. Pro Tools 101 will be offered June 6-9. There also will be a Pro Tools 201 class offered June 13-16. Enrollment is limited. A $100 nonrefundable deposit is required to reserve a place in the class. The total fee is $575 for matriculating SCAD students and $750 for all others and includes the $100 nonrefundable deposit. The balance is due prior to the first day of class. Provence tours on tap There will be docent-guided educational tours of Provence, France, based from SCAD-Lacoste May 22-29. Tour participants will be housed in the college’s private residence in Lacoste. All meals are included, with evening dining in local restaurants selected for their excellent cuisine. The tour price is $2,395 (this does not include air fare to Marseilles). The fee includes airport pickup/dropoff in Marseilles, lodging, all meals, daily transportation by custom tour bus, faculty docent and venue admittance. Smithfield Cottage posts weekend hours The Graduate Studies Center at Smithfield Cottage Graduate Studies Center, 118 W. Hall St., now has extended hours. Every Saturday and Sunday, Smithfield Cottage will be open 1-5 p.m. for graduate students and their families. The center is located one block from Forsyth Park and is on the college’s South Central “C” bus route. A Chatham Area Transit bus also stops at Barnard and Hall streets. Free parking is available on the street and in the college parking lot at Barnard and Hall streets, adjacent to the cottage. A bike rack is also provided. Security is on site, and a student ID is required for admission. The new hours were added because of graduate student requests for weekend accessibility. Call the Help Desk for A/V assistance The department of information management and technology is now responsible for meeting SCAD audiovisual service needs. Effective immediately, all special event requests that involve audiovisual services, requests for servicing or maintenance of audiovisual equipment, or connectivity issues involving audiovisual equipment and computers should be reported to the Help Desk at (912) 525-4567 or helpdesk@scad.edu. All special event requests must be placed two weeks prior the event. Questions also should be directed to the Help Desk. Faculty handbook posted online The 2005-06 Faculty Handbook has been revised. Section I (Faculty Guidelines) now includes the “Externally Funded Grants and Contracts” policy on pages 10 and 11.
