Annual Sidewalk Arts Festival offers new awards

By Rebecca Greenspan

The Savannah College of Art and Design presents the annual Sidewalk Arts Festival, April 30, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., in Forsyth Park. The festival, sponsored by the Coca-Cola Company, is free and open to the public.

An annual event that grows each year, the Sidewalk Arts Festival draws thousands of visitors to view temporary chalk masterpieces created on the sidewalks of the historic park.

First, second and third place prizes are awarded to students, alumni and prospective students. In addition, the Gray’s Reef Fantastic Fishes Award is presented to students, alumni, and prospective students or groups with the best depiction of marine environmental awareness. The 2000 Club, a Savannah civic organization, is also sponsoring a $500 cash award for the student or group that exhibits exceptional artistic merit and provides the best depiction of community service in Savannah. A Drawing Minor Award also will be awarded to the student, alumnus or group who exhibits a particularly strong use of chalk as a drawing medium.

The festival will offer food for purchase from Chick-fil-A, Roly Poly, Mellow Mushroom, Sweet Leaf Smokery and Ben & Jerry’s; a special 11 a.m. performance of selections from “West Side Story” by the SCAD media and performing arts department; live musical performances throughout the day, including blues-rock band Will Hoge, 1-2:30 p.m.; and jam band Jupiter Coyote, 3-4 p.m. and 4:30-5 p.m.; a performance by the SCAD cheerleaders at 2:30 p.m.; and Tableaux Vivants, 3-D representations of well-known paintings featuring SCAD students as live models, throughout the day. There will also be demonstrations by portraitist and alumnus Troy Wandzel, as well as booths by several SCAD majors, including interior design and animation.

For the second year, a pet area sponsored by PetSmart will offer water for dogs and product giveaways. Architecture students will also display Archi-PET-ure, one-of-a-kind doghouses made from non-traditional materials.
