Sand Gnats host battle of colleges
The Savannah Sand Gnats are hosting a battle among the local colleges April 30 during their 7:05 p.m. game against the Columbus Catfish. Students from SCAD, Armstrong Atlantic State University and Savannah State University will compete head-to-head between innings at events such as tug-of-war and big glove boxing. General admission tickets, regularly $6, are half price for all students who present a valid student ID at the Gnats ticket window. In addition, a collection of donations for Special Olympics will be taken during the game. All attendees can donate on behalf of the college of their choice. The winning college will be recognized on www.sandgnats.com, and T-shirts will be awarded to students from the victorious institution. Bean hosts jazz duo
Local jazz duo David Keller and Jackson Evans perform May 4, 7 p.m., at the Sentient Bean, 13 E. Park Ave. For more information about events, visit www.sentientbean.com.

Block party targets students
SCAD students are invited to a Spring Block Party May 7, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., at the corner of East 32nd and Habersham streets on the lot next to Queeny’s restaurant. The block party will feature free food and music. SCAD students who live in the neighborhood are encouraged to get involved. This event is sponsored by the Historic Savannah Foundation’s Lincoln Street Initiative. For more information, call Melissa Jest at (912) 233-7787, ext. 103.

Special Olympics seeks volunteers
The Area 17 Special Olympics will be held May 11 at Savannah Country Day School, 824 Stillwood Drive, and volunteers are needed. Volunteer registration begins at 8 a.m., opening ceremonies at 9:45 a.m. and competition at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Jeremy Johnson at jidco@earthlink.net or (912) 644-5387.

Clown holds free classes
Local clown Mister Funnybonz is offering free clown classes every Sunday, 4 p.m., through the end of the summer at the Forsyth Park fountain. Participants should wear old clothes for physical comedy gags and prepare to take notes. For more information, call (912) 233-7858.

Savannah offers parking cards
The city of Savannah’s parking services department announced pay-and-display parking meters are accepting “smart cards,” prepaid parking cards. The cards are available in denominations of $25, $50, $75 and $100. Initially the cards will be available for sale at the parking services office in the Bryan Street Garage at Bryan and Abercorn streets. There will be a $2 fee per card to cover the manufacturing costs, but through Aug. 1, the $2 fee is waived. Call Jim Gilliamsen at (912) 651-2834 with any questions or for more information.

Church focuses on simplicity
The Unitarian Universalist Beloved Community Church, 143 Houston St., offers a series on simplicity as a spiritual practice at 10 a.m. All are welcome.

Fans sought for senior citizens
The Corporate Volunteer Council of the United Way is sponsoring a fan drive for local senior citizens. The average high temperature in Savannah during July is 92 degrees. If you would like to donate a new fan for local seniors who are not able to afford air conditioning, contact Bob Frigo at bfrigo@scad.edu or (912) 525-7187. Donations will be accepted until June 1.
