By Michael MacEachern The Savannah College of Art and Design women’s tennis team clinched second place in the Florida Sun Conference and set a SCAD record for victories. The 11th-ranked Bees defeated No. 15 Flagler College 5-4 in a FSC women’s tennis match April 10 at the Bacon Park tennis courts. The Bees improved to 13-3 overall and 5-1 in the Florida Sun. The 13 victories in a season for the Bees broke the previous mark of 12 set during the 1998-99 season. Flagler fell to 6-8 overall and to 3-3 in the Florida Sun. SCAD will compete at the NAIA Region XIV Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla., April 15-17. Men’s tennis drops final match of regular season Flagler defeated SCAD 9-0 in a Florida Sun men’s tennis match April 10 at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts. The Saints, who are ranked No. 7 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Rating, improved to 10-4 overall and to 5-1 in the Florida Sun, while the Bees, who are ranked No. 20, fell to 8-8 overall and 2-4 in the conference. SCAD returns to action April 15-17 at the NAIA Region XIV Championship in Daytona Beach, Fla. Softball sweeps doubleheader from Warner Southern SCAD took control of the Florida Sun softball race as they swept a doubleheader over second-place Warner Southern College 8-1 and 4-3 April 10 at the Paulson Softball Complex. SCAD improved to 25-13 overall and 10-2 in the conference. SCAD has a two-game lead in the loss column in the conference race with just four conference games remaining. Warner Southern fell to 9-21 overall and to 4-4 in the conference. The Bees return to action April 15 for a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Brewton-Parker College in Mount Vernon. The Bees collected 12 hits in the opener and broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. After the Royals took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a double steal, SCAD scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning. SCAD tied the game at 1 as pitcher Sarah Areheart (10-6), who went 3-for-4, helped herself at the plate with an RBI single up the middle. Kayla Timulak gave the Bees a 3-1 lead with her fifth homer, a two-run laser to left-center field. The Bees chased starter Anna-Maria Jordan in the fifth. Areheart added an RBI single to score Cristina Morgado, who went 3-for-4 with two stolen bases. Brittany Kelley cleared the bases with her double to center field to give the Bees a 7-1 lead. SCAD scored its final run on a sacrifice fly by Whitney Hess. Areheart went the distance to claim the win as she scattered four hits and struck out two. FSC Player of the Week Jamie Smith also went 3-for-3 for the Bees. The Bees jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings of the nightcap. SCAD took a 1-0 lead in the first as Morgado singled, stole her 47th base of the season, and later scored on Areheart’s single down the left field line. SCAD added two more runs in the second on an RBI single by Jamie Smith, who went 2-for-2, and a bases-loaded walk to Charity Graham. The Bees scored their final run in the third on a fielding error by the Royals. Warner Southern got back in the game with three unearned runs in the fourth. That would be the closest they would get as they didn’t get another runner on base against SCAD starter Meghan Temple (9-6) the remainder of the game. Baseball sweeps weekend series SCAD won its first-ever Florida Sun baseball series as the Bees swept a doubleheader from Webber International University April 9 in Babson Park, Fla. SCAD won by scores of 4-2 and 2-0 to sweep the three-game series. The Bees, who are competing in the Florida Sun for the first time this year, won their fourth consecutive game to improve to 19-21 overall and 4-8 in the conference. The Warriors fell to 22-25 and 3-15. SCAD returns to action April 15 with a 6 p.m. Florida Sun contest against Warner Southern at Chain Field. The Bees took a 2-0 lead in the opener in the fourth inning. SCAD earned its first run on a sacrifice bunt by Chase Gilbert that scored Sean Smith, who led off the inning with a double. Adam Freeman, who reached on a walk, also scored on the play as the Warriors committed a throwing error trying to get Gilbert at first base. Webber International got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but SCAD put the game away on FSC Player of the Week Steven Argo’s two-run home run to left field in the sixth. It was the first homer of the season for Argo, who went 2-for-2. Eddie Anderson (2-7) pitched the complete game for the Bees to earn the win. In the second game, the Bees got both of their runs in the third inning on back-to-back squeeze bunts by Gilbert and Ryan Strefling. Smith went 2-for-4 and Freeman went 2-for-3 in the nightcap. Ryan Pope (5-6) scattered three hits and struck out six as he pitched his eighth complete game and his second shutout of the season. SCAD withstood a record-setting performance from Webber International pitcher Matt Krohe as they rallied for a 2-1 decision in the opener of the series April 8. Webber International took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh. The Bees, who only mustered one hit through the first seven innings, finally got to Krohe, who broke his own school record with 14 strikeouts in eight innings of work, in the eighth. Strefling led off with his second home run of the season to left field to tie the game at 1. SCAD took the lead an inning later off reliever Zach Cordier (3-3). Cordier got the first two batters out on strikes to start the ninth inning before Freeman singled up the middle for the Bees. Gilbert belted Cordier’s 2-2 pitch to the right-center field gap for a run-scoring triple that gave SCAD a 2-1 lead. Argo (1-0) pitched the final two scoreless innings for the Bees to earn the victory. Three equestrian riders win zone titles, advance to nationals Three equestrian riders won individual titles at the IHSA Zone 5 Championships April 10 in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Jordan Siegel won the Open Fences category, while Eleanor Turner captured the title in the Walk, Trot, Canter event. Gray Morris became the first SCAD rider to win a zone championship in the Walk, Trot category. All three riders advance to the IHSA National Championships that will be held in Sunbury, Ohio, May 5-8. They will also be on the Zone 5 All-star Team at nationals. SCAD also had two other riders compete at zones. Ashley Kelly finished third in the Open Flat event, while Ellie Mallis finished fourth in the Walk, Trot category. Golf teams ranked, regionals up next SCAD slid one position to No. 17 in the NAIA Women’s Golf Top 25 Rating, while SCAD cracked the Men’s Golf Top 25 Rating at No. 23. The women’s team, which finished 13th at last season’s NAIA National Championship, finished in sixth place at the Northwood University Spring Invitational held April 4-5 in Grand Prairie, Texas. The men’s team becomes the fifth squad at SCAD to be nationally ranked since the Bees rejoined the NAIA in 2003. The Bees finished in sixth place out of 26 teams at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate held April 1-3 in Jacksonville, N.C. Both teams return to the links April 17-18 when they compete in the Florida Sun Conference and NAIA Region XIV Tournament in Lake Wales, Fla. Gutt’s overtime goal achieves SCAD victory Dan Gutt’s goal in overtime gave SCAD a 6-5 decision over Furman University April 9 in a Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division B match in Greenville, S.C. The Bees completed the regular season with a 6-4 record for their inaugural season and a 4-2 ledger in Division B matches. The Bees await word to see if they qualify for the SELC playoffs later in April. The overtime goal for Gutt, who entered the match as the sixth-leading goal scorer among SELC Division B schools, was his 20th of the season. SCAD forced the overtime period with two goals in the final 90 seconds of regulation. Peter Callahan, who had one goal and one assist, pulled the Bees within one run of the Paladins. Craig Shaloiko, who is 10th in the league in scoring, tied the match at 5 with his third goal of the day. Shaloiko finished the regular season with 19 goals. Weston Auburn and Peter Callahan each added a goal and an assist for the Bees, while Matt Kimich contributed an assist. Pliny Reynolds added two assists to give him 11 on the season. Rowing teams win Lowcountry Novice Cup The men’s and women’s rowing teams competed against the College of Charleston in the Lowcountry Duels April 9 at Langley Pond in Aiken, S.C. The Bees won the inaugural Novice Cup. The men’s varsity four, women’s novice eight, men’s novice eight and women’s novice four teams each recorded wins against the College of Charleston, while the Cougars were victorious in the women’s varsity four, men’s varsity eight and women’s varsity eight events. SCAD returns to the water April 16-17, when they compete in the 38th annual Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship Regatta in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
