Prepare for life after graduation

By Cris Dykeman

Springtime means longer days, warmer weather and the approaching end of the academic year. There are many things to look forward to at this time. For some it’s heading home for the summer, for others a break before summer quarter, and for 1,076 Savannah College of Art and Design students, it’s graduation.

With graduation drawing near, many SCAD students might be contemplating what to do next, how to get there, and when they need to put their plan into action. This time is often overwhelming and leaves students feeling like they are alone. It can cause increased anxiety, intense pressure and elevated emotions. Handling these situations can be difficult, but with preparation the transition will go more smoothly.

Even though graduation is still more than a month away, it’s never too early to start preparing for the next phase of life. This is the time to start searching for a job (if that hasn’t already happened), update résumés, research jobs in a desirable area of the country, send out résumés and begin setting up interviews. It may seem like a lot to do, but the sooner it’s started, the better you’ll feel.

During these last few months of college, it is important to set goals and deadlines, as well as using this time to enjoy yourself. All too often the pressure of graduation overrides everything else that is going on. Students forget to take time for themselves, to spend time with friends, relax and have fun. This is just as important as all of the other things that are going on right now. Taking time out for yourself will help decrease stress and alleviate anxieties. It will also increase productivity, which is crucial at this point in the year. It is important to find the right balance between work and relaxation; too much time in either area can add extra pressure. Relaxation can come in many forms: yoga, meditation and “hanging out” with friends, to name a few.

Another way to help alleviate stress and anxiety is to talk to someone who’s trusted, such as a friend, family member or counselor. The Center for Student Counseling and Disability Services offers a group, “Get Ready to Graduate,” that has been designed for this purpose. The group is set up to be a support group and outlet for graduating seniors and to provide input from others on how to deal with stressors common during this time. Every Friday at 4 p.m. on the fourth floor of American Hall, the group will tackle a new topic of discussion that has been determined based on the needs of the group. If there is a more serious issue or one-on-one counseling is needed, individual appointments are available by calling (912) 525-6971.

Another option for alleviating stress about graduation is to attend the workshops provided by the office of career services. To find information on the topics and dates of the workshops, visit www.scad.edu/jobmagnet.

These resources are beneficial at every stage of college life. It’s never too early to start preparing for life after graduation. Remember to set a timeline, and leave room to have a little fun. This will help you succeed and get the most from your remaining time here at SCAD.
