Volunteers needed for Sidewalk Arts Festival
The Savannah College of Art and Design’s 25th annual Sidewalk Arts Festival will be held April 30, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m., in Forsyth Park. This is a college-wide event, and SCAD is counting on staff support and participation. Take a few minutes to complete the SAF volunteer registration form online in MySCAD Personal Announcements.

Historian lecture planned for April 14
The Savannah College of Art and Design presents “Rediscovery of Fort Forgotten: The Excavation of Fort Zachary Taylor, Key West,” a lecture by Tybee Island Historical Society Executive Director Cullen Chambers, April 14, 6:30 p.m., at Orleans Hall, 201 Barnard St. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Chambers is also director of the Tybee lighthouse complex and was previously site manager of the Fort Zachary Taylor State Historic Site in Key West, Fla. In his presentation, Chambers relates the story of Fort Taylor, which was once a Union stronghold and one of America’s most formidable and strategically located Third System fortifications. Lost under sand, brick and granite debris and eventually tons of obsolete Navy scrap metal after an attempt at modernization, Fort Taylor was all but forgotten until the curiosity of one man led to its rediscovery and recognition as one of the nation’s largest sources of pre-Civil War and Civil War-era artillery and ammunition.

Theorist lecture planned for April 14
Artist and theorist Roy Ascott will deliver a lecture titled “Transdisciplinary Transformations: Art and Design in a Culture of Connectivity” April 14, 7 p.m., at Orleans Hall, 201 Barnard St., as part of the Art History Lecture Series. Ascott is a pioneer of cybernetics and telematics in art. An internationally renowned practitioner, theorist and educator, his work focuses on the impact of digital networks on consciousness.

Excel workshop to be held April 15
Faculty members who are unfamiliar with Microsoft Excel are invited to attend “Faculty Essentials: ‘Excel’ at Navigating the New Digital Grade Sheet” April 15, 9-11 a.m., in the computer lab in Dyson House, 121 W. Boundary St.

Designed for the novice Excel user, this session teaches the terminology and processes needed to create, format and print basic spreadsheets and charts through hands-on exercises and a lecture. To register, e-mail technology training coordinator Judi Anderson at janderso@scad.edu.

Textbook deadlines coming soon
Textbook adoptions for Summer 2005 are due April 15. Faculty members who are teaching this summer and did not receive textbook adoption forms should contact Lisa Leach at (912) 525-7579 or textbooks@scad.edu.

The deadline for students to purchase books for Spring 2005 is April 18. Starting April 18, Ex Libris will conduct inventory in the textbook department and begin returning unsold books to the publisher if there are no orders for those books for Summer 2005.

Textbook adoptions for Fall 2005 are due by May 1. Textbook adoption forms will be delivered by April 14. Faculty members may e-mail textbook orders as soon as they know their class schedules for the fall quarter to textbooks@scad.edu or online at www.exlibris.bkstr.com.

SCAD-Atlanta interest meetings scheduled
Interest meetings for SCAD-Atlanta will be held the following dates: April 19, 8:30 p.m., and May 13, 3:30 p.m. The meetings will be held in Pepe Hall, 212 W. Taylor St.

Housing is available for Summer 2005 at the Spring House, 1470 Spring St., for $1770. There is no meal plan requirement at Spring House; however, meals will be available for purchase at the SCAD-Atlanta facility, 1600 Peachtree St. N.E.

Faculty/staff ballpark day now April 16
The annual Faculty/Staff Day at the Ballpark has been rescheduled to April 16 at Chain Field, Bud Brown Drive, Garden City. The Bees take on Warner Southern College in a doubleheader starting at noon.

Tickets that were issued for the original Faculty/Staff Day at the Ballpark date of March 26 are good for the April 16 game. Tickets are free to SCAD faculty and staff members and their families. For tickets, contact Rae Lucas at (912) 525-4811 or rlucas@scad.edu.

Support the Silver Scholarship
The Silver Scholarship raffle and celebration will be April 28, 8

p.m. in Orleans Hall. All students, staff and faculty members are invited. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Over the Top,” to mark the endowment of the scholarship.

The Silver Scholarship was established by alumni services and the United Student Forum to help SCAD students achieve their academic goals by providing financial support for their education. This year the students are selling raffle tickets for a 1990 BMW 325i black convertible donated to SCAD by Critz BMW. The drawing will take place at the “Over the Top” celebration at 10 p.m.

There will be live music by Oval Opus as well as food and refreshments. To purchase raffle tickets, call the office of student involvement at (912) 525-4400.

Grant-writing workshop to be held April 29
The office of faculty development and the Writing Center offer a grant-writing workshop for SCAD faculty members interested in obtaining outside funding for special projects related to individual artistic endeavors and professional development. The workshop is April 29, 1-4 p.m., Jen Library, 201 E. Broughton St., Room 109.

The workshop promises to demystify grant-seeking and writing and to highlight a variety of resources and best practices. Space is limited. To reserve a seat, e-mail fconn@scad.edu.

Call the Help Desk for A/V assistance
The department of information management and technology is now responsible for meeting SCAD audiovisual service needs. Effective immediately, all special event requests that involve audiovisual services, requests for servicing or maintenance of audiovisual equipment, or connectivity issues involving audiovisual equipment and computers should be reported to the Help Desk at (912) 525-4567 or helpdesk@scad.edu. All special event requests must be placed two weeks prior the event. Questions also should be directed to the Help Desk.

‘Resurrection’ volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed to assist with preparation of screens for the “Resurrection” installation by Julia Barton in the Habersham Hall courtyard, 235 Habersham St. Contact Marcia Weiss at (912) 525-6991 or mweiss@scad.edu for more information or to sign up.

Employees offered new benefit
Long-term care insurance through Aetna is now offered as an employee benefit. Informational and enrollment meetings will take place April 8, 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., Orleans Hall, 201 Barnard St.

Long-term care insurance is being offered to employees who regularly work at least 32 hours per week. The open enrollment period for this benefit runs through April 15. Those who enroll during this time will not have to answer any medical questions. Summer and fall advisement, registration coming soon
Faculty advisement for summer and fall quarters is April 11-22. Students should meet with their faculty adviser before registering for summer or fall classes.

Summer and fall quarter registration will begin April 25. Below is the registration schedule for each class.

Students should check their e-mail April 19 to find their assigned time ticket.
Graduate students begin April 25.
Seniors begin April 27.
Juniors begin April 29.
Sophomores begin May 3.
First-year students begin May 5.

Creativity lecture slated for April 21
Dana Boyd, Ph.D., will deliver a lecture titled, “Creativity is a Process Not a Product: 10 Ways to Tap Your Creativity Keg” April 21, 7 p.m., in the Oglethorpe House ballroom, 201 W. Oglethorpe Ave. The lecture is free to the public and students. Boyd is president and owner of Organizational Doctor Inc. and International Center for Leadership and Coaching (www.internationalcoach.org). Her personal mission in life is to help others reach their innermost potential while having as much fun as possible.

Game developers share insight
On May 6, SCAD and Thomson Course Technology present Game Developers eXchange for the first time. GDX 2005 brings game-industry veterans and experts to SCAD-Atlanta for an all-day event to share their behind-the-scenes knowledge of the game industry. At sessions for attendees, professionals will reveal what goes into developing video games, including game design, art and programming.

The conference is free, but space is limited. Registration will be held March 23. GDX 2005 will be held at the college’s Atlanta facility, 1600 Peachtree St. N.E., 9 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. Transportation will be provided for SCAD faculty, staff and students. Sequential art department hosts Editors’ Day
The sequential art department will host Editors’ Day April 28-29. This year’s event features class visits and portfolio reviews by Bob Schreck, Batman group editor for DC Comics; Axel Alonso, group editor for Marvel Comics; Chris Staros, editor-in-chief and publisher of Top Shelf Comics; Jeremy Ross, Tokyopop editor; Matt Milberger, White Wolf editor and SCAD alumnus; and Jeff Mason, editor and publisher of Alternative Comics. On April 28, there will be a panel discussion in the Oglethorpe House ballroom, 9-10:30 p.m. On April 29, portfolio reviews will take place 10 a.m. - noon and 2-4:30 p.m. in Norris Hall.
