Beach Institute holds lecture series The Beach Institute will hold their 2005 lecture series April 15-17. Titled “Lift Every Voice: The Influence of African Americans in the Entertainment Industry,” the series includes three lectures and a panel discussion on hip-hop music, all free and open to the public. On April 15, 7 p.m., Michael Eric Dyson will speak at First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery St. April 16, 1 p.m., the “Influence of Hip Hop” panel, featuring radio personality Doug Banks, will meet at the Johnny Mercer Theater in the Savannah Civic Center. Fling benefits pets On April 16, a Spring Pet Fling will take place at the Highway 21 Drive-in in Beaufort, S.C., 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Animal organizations, animal rescues and pet-oriented businesses in the Lowcountry are invited to participate. Earth Day run sponsored by 4-H The Chatham County 4-H will sponsor the Earth Day 5-K Family Fun Run during the Earth Day Celebration at Forsyth Park April 16. Registration begins by the fountain at 9:30 a.m., with the run starting at 10 a.m. Pre-registration fee is $10, and registration at the event costs $15. Church focuses on simplicity The Unitarian Universalist Beloved Community Church, 143 Houston St., offers a series on simplicity as a spiritual practice beginning April 17 at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Clown holds free classes Local clown Mister Funnybonz is offering free clown classes every Sunday, 4 p.m., at the Forsyth Park fountain. Church welcomes visitors At the Unitarian Universalist Church of Savannah, 317 E. Harris St., Joan Kahn-Schneider gives her monthly sermon April 17, 11 a.m., on “A Merry Heart Doeth Good.” All visitors are welcome. Childcare is provided. Crab fest coincides with Earth Day The Old Village Association of Port Royal, S.C., hosts the second annual Soft Shell Crab Fest April 23, noon - 5 p.m., as well as a local Earth Day celebration. The festival includes music, a dance contest, food from a number of local restaurants, art exhibitions and a classic car show. The festival is free and open to the public. Bean offers poetry event The Sentient Bean, 13 E. Park Ave., hosts A.W.O.L. Inc. April 17, 8 p.m. A.W.O.L Inc. is an organization of poets, hip-hop artists and performers. Fans sought for senior citizens The Corporate Volunteer Council of the United Way is sponsoring a fan drive for local senior citizens. The average high temperature in Savannah during July is 92 degrees. Special Olympics seeks volunteers The Area 17 Special Olympics will be held May 11 at Savannah Country Day School, 824 Stillwood Drive, and volunteers are needed.
