By Michael MacEachern Dan Gutt had the hot hand again as the Savannah College of Art and Design men’s lacrosse team defeated Southern Virginia University 11-5 in a Southeastern Lacrosse Conference Division B match March 19 in Forsyth Park. The Bees — winners of five of their last six matches — improved to 5-3 overall and to 3-2 in Division B. SCAD returns to action April 3 with a noon match against North Carolina State University in Forsyth Park. Gutt, who scored six goals in last week’s victory over Liberty University, added five more against the Knights. Craig Shaloiko added four goals for the Bees. Shaloiko and Gutt are tied for the team lead in goals scored with 16. Weston Auburn also registered five points — two goals and three assists — against Southern Virginia. Spencer Moore and Peter Callahan each assisted on three goals for the Bees, while Matt Kimich and Rocco Avellino each tallied one assist. Baseball wins four games over spring break The baseball team split a doubleheader at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex March 19 in Ormond Beach, Fla. Olivet Nazarene University defeated the Bees 7-1 in the opener before SCAD shut out Grand View College 2-0 in the nightcap. The Bees, who won four games on the spring break trip, improved to 15-17. SCAD returns to action March 25 with a 7 p.m. Florida Sun Conference game against Florida Memorial College at Grayson Stadium. Against Grand View, the Bees scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Ryan Strefling, who went 1-for-3 with a double, scored on a passed ball in the fifth before Adam Freeman’s RBI groundout scored Sean Smith an inning later. Ryan Pope (4-5) went the distance against Grand View, allowing just four hits and striking out six. Pope was named the Florida Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 20. Steven Argo led the Bees with three hits. In the opener, Olivet Nazarene scored six times in the third inning against SCAD starter Matt Courtright (1-1). SCAD scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to upset No. 25 St. Xavier University 2-1 March 18. Eddie Anderson (1-6) picked up his first victory of the season as he allowed just four hits and struck out five in the complete-game effort. The Bees banged out 10 hits as they defeated the University of Mary 6-2 March 15. Matt Barker, who also pitched three scoreless innings to earn his first save, and Casey Allen each went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Bees. Allen also had a double and drove in a run for SCAD. Smith went 2-for-5 with an RBI, while Adam Honeycutt drove in two runs. Courtright picked up the win as he pitched six innings for the Bees. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute scored the game’s first 10 runs as the Red Hawks defeated the baseball team 10-3 March 14. SCAD snapped its four-game losing streak as the baseball team defeated Robert Morris College 15-3 March 14. With the Bees holding a 3-2 lead, SCAD broke the game wide open in the third inning as they scored seven times against the Eagles. Seven of the 15 hits for the Bees were for extra bases. SCAD hit two triples and added five doubles. Strefling went 3-for-3 with a double and a triple and drove in three runs. Honeycutt also had three hits with a double and an RBI. Allen and Barker each added two-run doubles for the Bees. Argo added a double, while Mike Cahill registered a triple. Pope pitched a complete game for the Bees, striking out a career-high 10 and allowing just one earned run. Women’s tennis achieves three-match win streak SCAD recorded a 9-0 shutout over St. Thomas University in a Florida Sun women’s tennis match March 19 in Orlando, Fla. The Bees, who are ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Rating, improved to 6-2 overall and to 3-1 in the conference. SCAD returns to action March 27 at 1 p.m. when they host University of Sioux Falls at the Bacon Park Tennis Courts. SCAD did not drop a single game in either the doubles or singles matches. SCAD also recorded a 9-0 shutout over Minnesota State University March 18. SCAD recorded a 9-0 Florida Sun Conference victory over Webber International University March 16. SCAD only dropped one game as the Bees took a 3-0 lead after doubles. SCAD only dropped 10 games as the Bees posted straight-set victories in singles. No. 8 Shorter College defeated SCAD in a battle of nationally ranked teams 7-2 March 15 at Bacon Park. SCAD trailed 2-1 after doubles as Leocadie Collot and Erica Cardenas picked up the victory for the Bees at No. 3 doubles. The Bees’ only win in singles was by Marisol Angel at No. 6 singles. Angel defeated Michelle Lord 2-6, 7-5 and 6-5. Rowing teams earn three medals at invitational The men’s and women’s rowing teams picked up three medals — a gold, a silver and a bronze — at the Augusta Spring Invitational March 19 in Aiken, S.C. The Bees won the gold in the men’s doubles event as Darren Sumich and Clinton Leite navigated the 2,000-meter course at Langley Pond with a time of 7:41.6. SCAD won silver in the women’s novice eight race as the Bees finished in 8:09.5. Members of the squad included Season Bivens (stroke), Heidi Worthington (7 seat), Katie Dunn (6 seat), Erin Gallagher (5 seat), Anastasia Pedler (4 seat), Laura Craighierst (3 seat), Lauren Raus (2 seat), Cesira Farrell (bow) and Alex Gibbs (coxswain). The Bees captured the bronze in the men’s novice eight race with a time of 7:34.6. Members of the team included Jon Forsman (stroke), Matt Bell (7 seat), Chandler Brooks (6 seat), Wyatt Smith (5 seat), A.J. Willson (4 seat), James Duree (3 seat), Ted Vitale (2 seat), Mike Mankin (bow) and Candice Ciesla (coxswain). SCAD competed in six other events; however, none advanced out of their heats for the finals. The Bees finished fourth in the women’s varsity four with a time of 8:44.2. Members of the team included Kris Dixon (stroke), Stephanie Waugh (3 seat), Amanda Cunningham (2 seat), Karen Kelly (bow) and Chris Ruhlen (coxswain). The Bees finished fourth in their heat in the men’s varsity four as the team of Walker Carney (stroke), Omar Richardson (3 seat), Chris Boone (2 seat), David Sharp (bow) and Russell Yost (coxswain) registered a time of 7:47.9. The team of Bridgid Boyle (stroke), Julie Crowell (3 seat), Chelsea Jones (2 seat), Ashley Crooks (bow) and Gillian McDevitt (coxswain) finished fourth in the women’s lightweight four with a time of 8:52.5. SCAD’s team of Bivens (stroke), Waugh (7 seat), Dunn (6 seat), Gallagher (5 seat), Cunningham (4 seat), Laura Craighierst (3 seat), Dixon (2 seat), Farrell (bow) and Ruhlen (coxswain) finished in fourth in the women’s varsity eight race with a time of 8:02.1. The Bees finished fourth in the men’s varsity eight race with a time of 7:16.5. Members of the team for SCAD included Willson (stroke), Leite (7 seat), Forsman (6 seat), Smith (5 seat), Sumich (4 seat), Sharp (3 seat), Carney (2 seat), Richardson (bow) and Yost (coxswain). The women’s novice four team of Casandra Perez (stroke), Kate Fealtman (3 seat), Meagan Tobin (2 seat), McDevitt (bow) and Minji Kang (coxswain) finished fourth. The Bees compete at the Clemson Sprints Regatta March 26 in Clemson, S.C. Women’s golf finishes fourth at invitational The women’s golf team finished in fourth place at the Jekyll Island Women’s Collegiate Invitational March 19-20 in Jekyll Island. SCAD, which is ranked 18th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Rating, shot a final round of 353 on the Indian Mounds Golf Course to finish the 36-hole tournament with a score of 691. DePauw University, which finished third at last year’s NCAA Division III Tournament, won the 16-team tournament with a score of 657, four strokes better than the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, which finished second at last year’s NCAA Division III Tournament. Individually, freshman Hallie Cochran was named to the all-tournament team, finishing tied for fifth place at 163 after shooting a final-round 83. Ashley Warsaw finished at 172 after carding a final-round 88. Sarah Cobb tallied a 173 after shooting 89 in the final round, while teammate Julia Fountain finished at 185 after a final-round 93. SCAD finished tied for third place at the Jekyll Island One-day Classic women’s golf tournament March 18. SCAD finished the 18-hole tournament with a round of 357 along with Mount Holyoke College. Mary Hardin-Baylor won the tournament with a score of 325, 24 strokes better than Illinois Wesleyan University. Warsaw led the Bees with a round of 84, good for a fifth-place tie. Cochran finished with an 87, followed by Fountain with a 92 and Cobb with a 94. SCAD returns to action April 4-5 at the Northwood Tournament in Grand Prairie, Texas. Men’s golf finishes tied for fifth at invitational The men’s golf team finished tied for fifth place at the 15th annual Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagle Invitational March 14-15 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The 21-team field featured eight nationally ranked NAIA teams. The Bees carded a final round 301 to finish the 36-hole tournament tied with No. 3 Lee University at 601. Second-ranked Oklahoma Christian University won its fourth tournament of the season as they finished with score of 575. Brevard Community College finished in second at 586, followed by Eckerd College (591) and No. 18 Northwood University (599). SCAD finished ahead of No. 21 Webber International University (606) and No. 25 Embry-Riddle (609). Adam Jordan carded a one-under-par final round of 71 on the par-72, 6,894-yard layout at the Spruce Creek Country Club to finish tied for 16th place at 149. Frank van Es finished a stroke back at 150 after shooting a final-round 73 to tie for 22nd place. Sof Oumohand shot a 79 to finish in a tie for 32nd with a two-day total of 152. Jon Orchin finished tied for 37th at 153 after a final-round 78, while Dalton Harpe finished in 81st place at 162 after a round of 87. SCAD returns to action April 1-3 at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate in Jacksonville, N.C. Men’s tennis earns first conference win of season SCAD picked up its first Florida Sun men’s tennis victory of the season as the Bees defeated St. Thomas 5-1 March 19 in Orlando, Fla. The Bees, who are ranked No. 15 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Rating, improved to 3-4 overall and to 1-3 in the conference. SCAD returns to action March 27 when they host Sioux Falls at Bacon Park. SCAD won every match as the Bees defeated Minnesota State Mankato 9-0 March 18. Webber International won four of the six singles matches as the Warriors defeated the Bees 6-3 in a Florida Sun match March 16. SCAD’s Mike Green defeated Christophe Bonadona 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, while Javier Angel defeated Nico Jungkind 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. The Bees’ other win came at No. 3 doubles as Adrian White and Brian Ahmes defeated Matias Alderete and Leigh Griffiths 8-6. No. 8 Shorter defeated SCAD in a battle of nationally ranked teams 7-2 March 15 at Bacon Park. Green and Fernando Horacasitas picked up the wins for SCAD in singles. Green defeated Eduardo Cavasotti 6-2, retired at No. 1, while Horacasitas outlasted Adrian Laza in three sets 2-6, 7-6 (5) and 7-4. Morgado sets SCAD stolen base record Vanguard University swept a softball doubleheader SCAD March 18 in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Lions won by scores of 2-0 and 7-3. SCAD fell to 19-11, while the Lions won their sixth consecutive game and improved to 10-12. The Bees return to action March 25 when they host Warner Southern College in a 2 p.m. Florida Sun Conference doubleheader at the Paulson Softball Complex. Jamie Smith and Jessica Sciulli each went 2-for-3 for the Bees in the nightcap, while Cristina Morgado stole three bases in the doubleheader raising her total to 37 this season and setting the school’s single-season stolen base record. The previous record of 32 was set by Larissa Stec during the 2002 season. Morgado only needs 17 stolen bases to break the college’s career record of 53, held by Stec. SCAD swept a split softball doubleheader March 17 at the 2005 Sun West Challenge in Orange, Calif. The Bees defeated Illinois College 8-5 in the opener, and defeated Hope International University 10-2 in six innings in the nightcap. In the opener against Illinois College, the Bees tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the first. Charity Graham, who went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, reached on a bunt single and moved to third on two of her five stolen bases in the doubleheader. Graham later scored on a single by Kayla Timulak, who went 3-for-4. SCAD broke open the game with four runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead. Morgado, who reached on an error, scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Sarah Areheart made the score 3-1 on her sacrifice fly before Timulak and Whitney Hess had back-to-back doubles. Smith, who went 2-for-2 with 2 RBI, drove in the final run for the Bees with a single. The Bees tacked on another run in the fourth on an RBI double by Areheart, before Illinois College rallied with three runs in the fifth inning to pull within two runs at 6-4. SCAD added some insurance in the fifth and sixth innings with single runs. Smith had an RBI single in the fifth, while the Bees took advantage of one of three errors by Illinois College to score their final run in the sixth. Alex Alcott (2-0) picked up the victory as she allowed four runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings, while Meghan Temple earned her first save of the season. Temple scattered four hits and struck out four in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Against Hope International, the Bees took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Timulak, who went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI. The Bees again broke up the game in the third inning with four runs as they took advantage of two of the five errors committed by the Royals. Timulak and Sciulli had run-scoring hits in the inning as SCAD took a 5-0 lead. SCAD scored a run in the fifth on a single by Smith, who went 3-for-3. The Bees closed out the game with four runs in the next inning. Areheart drove in a run with a double to right field before Brittany Kelley ended the game with a three-run homer. It was her third home run of the season. Five of the 12 hits for SCAD went for extra bases against the Royals. Morgado also went 2-for-4 for the Bees in the nightcap. Kerri Lewis (3-1) went the distance for the Bees as she scattered seven hits and struck out three batters in six innings. No. 6 California Baptist University swept a softball doubleheader from SCAD March 16 in Riverside, Calif. The Lancers won by scores of 7-1 and 8-0 to run their win streak to 15 games. Fencing club participates in St. Patrick’s Day Slash The fencing team participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Slash this past weekend in Savannah. The team fenced well, particularly in epée. Robin Holstein finished first in epée, earning his United States Fencing Association “E” rating. Matt Ornstein placed third in epée. Competing in their first tournament were Sara Pitz, Trevor Dunaway and Erwin Rondina. The team has two more events this spring. The Bees will compete at the Fool’s Fest in Statesboro April 2-3 and at the Georgia United States Fencing Association Divisionals April 8-9 in Atlanta.
