Beach features trio

Bean events lineup
The Sentient Bean, 13 E. Park Ave., offers an Old Time Music Jam Session March 28 at 7 p.m. GA Tech on Tap, March 29 at 7 p.m., features David Scott on “Structural Repair: Making Our Buildings and Bridges Work Longer and Harder.” On March 30 at 7 p.m., judges Susan Tate and Louisa Abbott present an educational talk titled “This I Know.” Soap performs April 1 at 8 p.m. For more information about events, visit www.sentientbean.com.

Volunteer instructors needed
The University of South Carolina Beaufort Learning Exchange is seeking volunteer instructors for the 2005-06 semesters. The TLX program provides life-long learning opportunities for residents of the lowcountry. Volunteer instructors, teaching in Beaufort, Bluffton or Hilton Head Island, may share their expertise in a variety of fields including (but not limited to) religion, history, politics, art, literature, science, ecology, archaeology and more. AASU choir performs
The Armstrong Atlantic State University choir presents “My Spirit Sings All Day” at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, 50 Diamond Causeway, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. The program features student conductors and compositions.

Festival features shearing
The annual Sheep to Shawl Festival takes place at Oatland Island Education Center, 711 Sandtown Road, April 2, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. The festival includes sheep and alpaca shearing, and visitors can participate in activities including carding, spinning and weaving. St. Mary’s holds extravaganza
St. Mary’s Home holds its 18th annual Art Extravaganza at the Savannah Marriott Riverfront at 6 p.m. April 3. All proceeds benefit the children at the home. Strike out child abuse
Help “Strike Out Child Abuse!” by purchasing tickets for the Savannah Sand Gnats’ first Friday home game at 7 p.m. April 8 to benefit the Coastal Children’s Advocacy Center. As part of Child Abuse Prevention Month activities, the center, which provides free services to children who have been sexually or physically abused, is selling general admission tickets to the game, which will be followed by free fireworks. Tickets are available at Skidaway Family Chiropractic Center, 5704 Skidaway Road; Savannah Pediatrics, 5102 Paulsen St.; or from the center at (912) 236-1401.

Golf tournament benefits home
The Notre Dame Club of Savannah sponsors a golf tournament April 8 at the Southbridge Golf Club. Proceeds benefit a project that enables a Notre Dame student to live at St. Mary’s Home for six weeks during the summer and work with the children there. Lunch, golf, cart and prizes are included in the entry fee of $75 per player or $300 for a team of four. Special Olympics seeks volunteers
The Chatham County Special Olympics take place April 13 at Savannah State University, 3219 College St., and Area 17 Special Olympics will be held May 11 at Savannah Country Day School, 824 Stillwood Drive. Volunteers are needed for both events.  Volunteer registration begins at 8 a.m., opening ceremonies at 9:45 a.m. and competition at 10 a.m. For more information, contact Jeremy Johnson at jidco@earthlink.net or (912) 644-5387.

Fling benefits pets
On April 16, a Spring Pet Fling takes place at the Highway 21 Drive-in in Beaufort, S.C., 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. Animal organizations, animal rescues and pet-oriented businesses in the Lowcountry are invited to participate. Proceeds from the event, which is hosted by Lowcountry Rottweiler Rescue, go to local animal rescues and spay/neuter programs.

Fans sought for senior citizens
The Corporate Volunteer Council of the United Way is sponsoring a fan drive for local senior citizens. The average high temperature in Savannah during July is 92 degrees.  If you would like to donate a new fan for local seniors who are not able to afford air conditioning, contact Bob Frigo at bfrigo@scad.edu or (912) 525-7187. Donations will be accepted until May 1.

Speech and hearing center offers screenings
The Savannah Speech and Hearing Center, 1206 E. 66th St., offers free hearing and speech screenings every Thursday morning 9-11 a.m. For more information, call (912) 355-4601.
