Student callers contribute to phonathon’s success By McLean Hooff This spring, the Savannah College of Art and Design office of institutional advancement will wrap up the fourth annual phonathon, which began in September and continues through May. The purpose of the phonathon is to connect with alumni, parents, friends of the college and businesses to ask for their support of the SCAD Annual Fund. The phonathon’s callers are ambassadors of SCAD, sometimes serving as the only personal contact alumni and families have with the college. At the end of last year, the student callers secured 1,228 gifts and pledges totaling $86,930, and placed more than 25,393 calls. Those numbers are a far cry from those of the first year: 289 gifts secured, pledges totaling $24,090 and less than 10,000 calls placed. In addition to raising money for the SCAD Annual Fund, the phonathon is also a way to maintain accurate addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses. This information is important for staying in touch with alumni and finding out about their career success. Much of the phonathon success can be attributed to the students who work as callers. This year’s callers include Alicia Rollend, Karla Sanford, Linette Chalifaux, Sabrina Hammond, Sarah Bishop, Ann Morris, Sarah LeQuire, Courtney Cross and Rob Boots. “I enjoy working at the phonathon because you get to speak directly with alumni and get feedback from them on what to do to get ahead,” said Chalifaux, a senior who has worked at the phonathon for two years. “Plus, I am raising money for students who need financial assistance and that is rewarding.” As SCAD continues to grow, so do the number of alumni and SCAD families to be contacted through the phonathon. The office of institutional advancement is looking for new recruits to add to the strong team of phonathon callers for spring quarter. To become part of the phonathon team, call (912) 525-5862 or e-mail mhooff@scad.edu. Hooff is associate director of development. |
