District, the student newspaper of the Savannah College of Art and Design, received seven honors in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 22nd Gold Circle Awards: General Column Certificate of Merit to Jessica Clary; Art/Illustration, Portfolio of Work Certificate of Merit to William Thrasher; Advertising Page Design second place to Rebekah Owens, Colin Smith and Katie Van Fleet; Page One Design Certificate of Merit to Chiaw Pang, Owens and Smith; Single Subject Presentation, Portfolio of Work second place to Smith; Information Graphics, Black and White Certificate of Merit to Van Fleet; Information Graphics, Portfolio of Work Certificate of Merit to Van Fleet.

The Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s 22nd Gold Circle Awards is an annual competition for individual achievement by student writers, editors, designers and photographers. College student journalists from across the country submitted 4,571 entries in 75 categories. The awards were announced at the spring college media convention in New York City, March 19.



Students from Fibers Force, the college’s fibers department student organization, coordinated the creation of a queen-sized modern quilt composed of 36 squares made by fibers students, faculty and alumni. Each participant created a 12-inch fabric quilt block using appliqué, piecing and surface embellishment. Once all of the squares were collected, they were quilted, stitched together and hand-bound. The quilt was raffled off at “Merge,” the fibers department open house Feb. 25, raising $2,095. Proceeds were donated in full to the Doctors Without Borders general emergency relief fund.



Four furniture design students received top honors in the annual NICHE magazine design competition. The awards were announced at a ceremony at the Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft on Feb. 20. Aaron Heisler, a Master of Fine Arts degree candidate in furniture design from Green, N.Y., won first place in the furniture category for “Alejandro-bathroom sink.” Caitlin Regan, a senior in furniture design from Milwaukee, Wis., won first place in the wood category for “Homage to Mother and Daughter,” which she produced as a sophomore. Wil Gumerson, a Master of Fine Arts degree candidate in furniture design from Oklahoma City, Okla., won first place in the fibers decorative category for “Spats Rug.” Brian Whittington, a recent alumnus in furniture design from Montgomery, Ala., won first place in the mixed media category for his “Wedgee” table with seating, which he produced as a senior. In addition, Corey Drew, a senior in furniture design from West Palm Beach, Fla., was a finalist in the mixed media category for his untitled salt-and-pepper shaker set, which he produced as a sophomore.



Tamara Knapp-Grosz, Ph.D., director of the college’s Center for Student Counseling and Disability Services, has been named president-elect for the Georgia College Counseling Association. She will serve a three-year term beginning March 2005.

In addition, Knapp-Grosz was awarded the 2005 Advocacy for College Counseling Award at the state conference held Feb. 9-11 on St. Simons Island.

Chene Walz, a counselor at the center, also was elected to the GCCA board. She will serve as representative for the Savannah region.

The GCCA is a professional membership organization composed of professional practitioners employed in the counseling facilities of Georgia’s public and private institutes, colleges and universities. Most of these professionals are certified and/or licensed professional counselors and applied psychologists providing direct personal, educational and career counseling to the students, faculty and staff at their respective institutions of higher learning.



The Southern Jewelry Trade Association recently announced the winners of the student design competition at the Atlanta Jewelry Show. Metals and jewelry alumna Kelly L. Robinson won first place in the Silver category and also won Best in Show. Alumna Halli Norris took second in Silver while Tim Foster took third. In the Gold and Platinum category, student Megan Clark earned first place, Ryan Ricks won second place, and Molly Dingledine won third place. Student Carolyn McGonagle won first place in the Alternative Materials category. Elizabeth Thompson won second place and Ivy Maddix won third place.



Graphic design professor Trudy Abadie-Fail has been selected for inclusion in the ninth edition of “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.” This is her second nomination.



Painting graduate students Sarah Walko, Monica James, Karena Ness, Allison McElroy and Nathan Abels represented the college’s painting department in the College Art Association M.F.A. Exhibition at the Lowe Gallery in Atlanta, which opened Feb. 19 as part of the closing activities for the annual conference.
