SCAD-Atlanta to open March 2005

By Angela Hendrix and Angela Ashley

On Dec. 15 President Paula S. Wallace announced the opening of the Savannah College of Design in Atlanta.

Beginning March 2005, SCAD-Atlanta will provide undergraduate and graduate education in art and design, with initial course offerings including animation, art history, broadcast design and motion graphics, drawing, illustration and painting.

“We chose Atlanta because we see a need for a wider array of educational offerings for full-time students as well as working professionals,” Wallace said. “The metropolitan environment also will provide career-related opportunities for our students.”

SCAD-Atlanta will be located in Midtown at 1600 Peachtree St. The location choice was based on criteria including cost, readiness, computer network capabilities, nearby student amenities, student housing options in the areas and opportunities for future expansion.

“The 700 SCAD alumni who live and work in Atlanta have expressed great enthusiasm and anticipation for the new facility,” said Pamela Rhame, senior vice president for recruitment and communications. “We are eager to begin classes this spring and look forward to becoming a part of the Atlanta community through professional involvement and cultural activities.”

The facility will feature well-equipped classrooms and computer labs, studios, administrative and exhibition space, a fitness center, parking and proximity to various residential options.

“Nearly a dozen SCAD-Savannah faculty will teach initial course offerings in Atlanta,” said Ron Jones, director of off-campus programs. “SCAD-Atlanta also will host information sessions, portfolio reviews, exhibitions and lectures.”

Jones is currently responsible for coordinating academic programs at SCAD-Lacoste and managing short-term off-campus programs. He is now overseeing course offerings and faculty for SCAD-Atlanta as well.

“We expect to enroll more than 100 students for Spring 2005, including current SCAD-Savannah students who wish to study in Atlanta,” he said.

Students interested in enrolling at SCAD-Atlanta should contact Jones at the office of off-campus programs, 26 W. Harris St., or call 525-5803.

Hendrix is director of public information at SCAD.
