Advisement meetings explore major options By Monique Bos Students who haven’t yet declared their major have the option this quarter of attending group advisement meetings -- sessions providing information about each of the 23 majors offered at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Although the meetings are designed specifically for first-year students entering their second quarter, they are suitable for any students who haven’t declared a major and are interested in exploring their options. In addition, the group sessions satisfy the requirement that students meet with an adviser before registering for spring courses. The only exception is for students in their first quarter, who may attend one or more of the meetings but also must schedule an individual appointment with an adviser. Winter group advisement meetings take place on Jan. 14 and are divided into four time slots. Academic Adviser Wyc Rountree said the academic advising department tried to schedule related majors at different times, so interested students could attend more than one session. For example, a student may want to check out the sound design major meeting at 2 p.m. and film and television at 4 p.m. “Meetings will be led by faculty members from each major,” he said. “We’ve asked them to cover a number of items, including curriculum and content, course sequencing, samples of student work, department facilities and equipment, career options for graduates of the program, realistic salary options, related minors, internship opportunities, [and] professional and student organizations related to the major.” After discussing various aspects of the major, faculty members will take questions from students, Rountree said. “This is a way for students to gain additional information about their major of choice and to get the chance to talk to a faculty member, who has the expertise and who in most cases has a similar degree. Faculty members can provide so much career-related information.” In addition, Rountree said, students often have similar questions about majors, and the group meeting format provides a chance for those questions to be addressed. Advisers also will be present at each session with handouts about programs of study, course sequencing and career options. The office of career planning and placement prepared the career options sheets, which include information about Web sites, salary ranges and potential employers. Students who attend the group advisement meetings also may schedule individual appointments with their adviser if they have additional questions. “The goal is for students to be clear about what they need to register for,” Rountree said. Free transportation is provided, with buses looping between Oglethorpe and Weston houses to the different locations where the meetings are held. “This is really the second stage to the majors fair [held in the fall],” Rountree said. “This is where they’ve given some thought to what they want to study. Most first-year students declare their major in the spring.” Winter group advisement meetings take place Jan. 14. See the sidebar (Right) for times and locations. Winter group advisement meetings
