Alumni offer students taste of life in L.A.

By Nancy Tanneberg

On Dec. 4, Elisia Harkins, president of the Los Angeles/San Diego SCAD alumni chapter, and professors Bridgett Gaynor and Annette Haywood-Carter hosted a meet-and-greet event at the C&O Trattoria Restaurant in Venice Beach, Calif., for area alumni and students attending the Los Angeles off-campus program.

More than 55 people enjoyed high-quality Northern Italian pasta, while alumni and students exchanged business cards -- and students learned the value of networking. Alumni shared career information and tips about job opportunities in the Los Angeles area.

The event garnered positive responses. Valerie Thompson, who earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in video/film and works as a production assistant for Paramount Pictures/Touchstone Television, said, “I really had a great time meeting the students and seeing old friends. I was glad so many people showed up.”

William Lykke, an alumnus with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in computer art and an animator for Interplay, said, “That was so much fun! It was great talking to all the students. They were interested in talking to me because I have been out working for a while. I enjoyed hearing from them about all the changes the school has been experiencing.”

Linda Tierney, director of alumni services, was excited by the response to the networking event. “I was thrilled to hear how successful this event was for both our alumni and students. It warms my heart to know how much they care and want to help each other.”

Tierney said she looks forward to similar alumni-student networking opportunities with the college’s other alumni chapters, which include Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Chicago; Dallas/Ft. Worth; New York; Orlando, Fla.; San Francisco; Savannah and Washington, D.C., as well as Korea and Taiwan.
