Pei Ling Chan has a really big show
The Big Picture Show is an annual exhibition whose collective two-dimensional work boasts impressively large dimensions. This years show brings together an eclectic mix of 13 SCAD faculty, students and alumni. Michael Schneck, who expects to graduate from SCAD with an M.F.A. in computer art and interactive design in 2004, said he likes to keep things on the lighter side. For some reason, my subject matter tends to deal with food, one way or another, he said. From six-foot hamburgers to slightly abstracted fruits and vegetables, its the common denominator in my work. Schnecks Processed Food #5 is 25-by-56-inches and incorporates acrylic ink, wood and epoxy. Alumna Setona Pages artistic contribution to the show takes the form on a 38-by-38-inch giclée print, Egg Island Jetty. As one travels across the wide spaces of America, occasionally you might be lucky to see an old outdoor theater. Unfortunately, these big picture shows do not operate anymore. These structures stand wide and tall reminiscent of days gone by, said Page, who graduated with an M.F.A. in photography in 2000. I was reminded of these sights as SCAD invited us to submit images for this exhibition Viewing images in large format sets you inside the scene, playing some part in the storyline that each big picture delivers. Born in Medellín, Colombia, professor and muralist Jorge Alvarez is no stranger to large-scale paintings. Sleep Walker measures 90-by-68 inches and is oil and gold on linen. This is the painting of the girl with the snakes, he said. She is a jungle nymph seducing the spirit Koto in her dreams. Schneck, Page and Alvarez are joined by SCAD professors Stephen Gardner, Marcia Neblett and Georgia Perez; alumni Anna Keck, James Walker, Dara Lindsey Shady and Judi Szenes; and students Robert Park, Dan Saelinger and David Field. The Big Picture Show is on display at Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 Martin Luther King Blvd., through Jan. 13, 2004. |
