Presidents Chat Day scheduled SCAD President Paula Wallace will meet with students at Lai Wa Hall Nov. 7, 9 a.m. - noon, to hear their ideas and concerns. Liberal arts department offers new elective A new liberal arts English elective, Anglo-Irish Literature, will be offered beginning in the winter quarter. The course is inspired by the Book Journeys exhibition on Jonathan Swifts Gullivers Travels on display in the Earle W. Newton Center for British-American Studies located in Kiah Hall. The course explores Ireland through its literature and its relationship with Britain and the United States from the 18th century to the present day. The course uses the novel to explore questions surrounding national identity, culture, gender, politics and history and will also incorporate aspects of Irish art, architecture and film. Students seeking a dynamic English elective are encouraged to register for the course and can contact Bob Frigo for more details at bfrigo@scad.edu. Valparaiso runs through Nov. 9 Ghlei Productions, SCADs student organization for the performing arts, is staging Don DeLillos Valparaiso at the Afifi Amphitheater, 324 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, through Nov. 9. Valparaiso as a word represents places, things, objects and people. Valparaiso as a play provides a brutal glimpse of mass media from an unfamiliar and disturbing angle: our own. This is the regional premiere for this production and is co-produced by The Slapdash Players. It is a mixed-media installation with elements of the performing arts, film, television, sequential art, illustration, sound design and photography. Multicultural food festival to be held Nov. 7 The ISSO and ISA will host the annual Taste of the World Food Festival Nov. 7, noon - 2 p.m., at Orleans Hall, 201 Barnard St. The festival will feature more than 40 samples of cuisine specially prepared by local restaurants and international students from more than 12 countries. Admission is $8 per person and includes one plate of food. In addition, members of the ISA and ISSO will present entertainment throughout the two-hour event. Tickets are on sale at the door. For more information, e-mail to isso@scad.edu. Food drive scheduled Nov. 17-21 Residents of Oglethorpe House have organized a non-perishable food drive to be held Nov. 17-21. Food can be dropped off in Propes Hall or any residence life office Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All collected items will be donated to Americas Second Harvest. SCAD Society of Illustrators to hold meetings This years goals for the SCAD Society of Illustrators student organization include putting together a senior show, producing the illustration publication Illustrious, hosting lectures and volunteering at local schools through SOSs art education program. Cap and gown ordering set for Nov. 10-11 Students who will complete all of their degree requirements between fall 2003 and summer 2004 and want to participate in the commencement ceremony, please meet with Herff Jones representatives Nov. 10-11, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on the third floor of Ex Libris. Herff Jones will be on campus for students to order their caps and gowns, invitations and class rings. Student film auditions planned for Nov. 14, 16 Senior film and television students are holding an open audition session for about 50 student films. People of all ages are needed. The auditions will be held at the Lucas Theatre Nov. 14, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Nov. 16, 1-4 p.m. No apointment is necessary but it is appreciated. The site offers free access to arts organizations and individual artists alike. Opportunities are grouped according to location, time commitment, pay preference and artistic discipline. Working Class Studio internship available Working Class Studio is seeking interns for winter and spring quarters. Energetic and ambitious students are needed to intern within this multidisciplinary environment, which explores new and experimental techniques in textiles, surface design, installation and product development. Interview and portfolio review required; all majors and levels welcome to apply. Strong work ethic, high energy and Friday availability required. The deadline to apply is Nov. 15. SCAD anniversary exhibition seeks entries The Savannah College of Art and Design invites students, alumni, faculty and staff members to submit work for Faces of SCAD, a juried exhibition celebrating the colleges 25th anniversary. All work must be executed on 10-by-10-inch canvases that are exclusively available for purchase from the exhibitions department. The canvases cost $10 and will be available at the following galleries: Red Gallery, Pinnacle Gallery, Exhibit A Gallery and Pei Ling Chan Gallery. The entry deadline is Dec. 1.
