Baseball puts up a fight in doubleheader

By Michael MacEachern

The University of Dallas swept a baseball doubleheader from the Savannah College of Art and Design May 2 at Crusader Field in Irving, Texas. The Crusaders won the opener 8-2 before holding on for a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

The Crusaders, who have won 13 of their last 14 games, ended the regular season at 23-15-1. The Bees fell to 17-31. SCAD wraps up the 2004 season with a 1 p.m. doubleheader May 7 at Chain Field.

Three Dallas pitchers held the Bees to just two hits in the opener. Scott Frederick hit a solo home run to left field in the fourth to give the Bees a 1-0 lead. It was Frederick’s second of the season. The Crusaders scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead for good.

Michael Cave picked up the win for the Crusaders while Rich Fallat (3-13) took the loss in relief.

In the second game, the Crusaders got a bases clearing double by Matt Heinritz in the fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead.

Chris Tirro went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI for the Bees while Josh Eastwood went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Jon Seaman picked up the win for Dallas while Coleman Moore earned the save. Tyler King (3-5) took the loss for the Bees.

Women’s golf moves up in NAIA ratings

SCAD, which finished in third place at the NAIA Region XIV Championships in April, will find out later this month if they will qualify as an at-large entry for the 2004 NAIA National Championships, which will be held May 25-28 at the LPGA International Course in Daytona Beach, Fla.

National runner-up Oklahoma City University collected all 13 first-place votes to be ranked No. 1 with 325 points.
