SCAD makes plans for G8 Summit

The G8 Summit of international leaders is scheduled to meet in Savannah and Sea Island June 8-10. National, state and local leaders are preparing to welcome the G8 staff, delegates and thousands of journalists and reporters to Savannah. Recent reports in newspapers and on the Internet predict protesters also may converge on Savannah during the summit.

The Savannah College of Art and Design’s executive staff has been meeting to plan for the event, including access to buildings and security. Plans for college participation in events at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center during the summit include an exhibition, an office design project by the interior design department in conjunction with Home Depot and performances by students in media and performing arts.

Although no classes will be in session at that time, the college will remain open during the summit. Executive staff of the college will be prepared to implement contingency plans in the event circumstances change. The following steps have been proposed to accommodate college needs and staff concerns during the summit:

College parking lots will remain accessible only to students, faculty and staff with current SCAD permits properly displayed.

Some SCAD buildings in areas affected by summit security may be temporarily closed during the week of June 7-11.

Some personnel and college functions may be moved to other facilities that allow easier access.

Vice presidents have been asked to submit to the president a list of the personnel required to report to work during the week of June 7-11.

Staff who are not required to work June 7-11 may plan to take vacation that week (but are not required to).

Admission campus tours may be curtailed or suspended the week of June 7-11.
