Boundary
Village residence readied for fall
The more than 1,200 Savannah College of Art and Design students who live in the Weston, Dyson and Turner House residence halls will have 288 new neighbors next fall with the opening of Boundary Village. The apartment-style residence hall, located on a 3.72-acre site at the corner of Boundary Street and Louisville Road, will accommodate 288 SCAD students. Each of the 72 apartments in the three-story building will have four private bedrooms. “ It’s built to be a community and to foster the concept of a community,” said Vice President for Physical Resources Glenn Wallace Jr. “It will have a central clubhouse, with meeting space, a mail room and other features. The center of the complex will have sand volleyball courts and several wireless access towers, so that people can sit outside and use their computers.” Pedestrians will enter through the northeast corner of the property with motor vehicles using a separate entrance. In addition, sidewalks will be installed and the creation of new pedestrian thoroughfares will be explored. Rather than a separate residential enclave, Boundary Village is designed to complement SCAD’s other properties in the area. “It will be great for students when they want to visit friends in the other buildings,” Wallace said. “They’ll all be right there.” Boundary Village residents will have access to Café SCAD, the Dyson House computer lab and additional amenities located in the other three Boundary Street residence halls. Even though the building is not located inside the National Historic Landmark District and is not subject to the Savannah Historic Review Board’s guidelines, Wallace said the design of the building will be appropriate. “Although it’s not within that zone, we consulted with the review board so the building will be architecturally compatible with nearby buildings,” Wallace said. “We’ve done things such as parapet walls on the front of the meeting house that give a more industrial feel.” Several 19th century industrial buildings, part of the Historic Roundhouse Complex, are located nearby. The development plan was initiated by Urban Campus Environments and Boulevard Investors and will be leased by SCAD. |
