  Break out of the box

By Clinton Withers

Competition is like a wildfire — inconvenient but often necessary. Out of control, it leads to chaos and destruction; harnessed, it cleanses and renews. Some might argue that competition is an unnecessary evil. Others, like me, would suggest that competition breeds innovation, invention and technology. It insures only that the best survive. Competition within business is what creates notability, market share and profit, while competition on an individual level can help push boundaries and result in new solutions to old problems.

By harnessing a talent, you increase your chances of surviving the competition. There is no room for laziness in the game of competition. Energy, motivation and passion are necessities. Find your fire and use it to drive you.

Remember, status quo will never make you great. By conforming to the standards, you allow yourself to become average. Average ideas and minimum effort do not create great things. Learn be an uncommon individual with uncommon but powerful ideas.

The world is a box; break out of it. When facing challenges — either personal or professional — step away from the issue in order to create an unfamiliar strategy. Think of all the innovations in the world; every invention was once unimaginable. Learn what box you are in and find an exit strategy.

Seek practice. Competition is a game and if you do not play, you will not learn. Get involved in organizations, athletics or business ventures that will setup a playing field for you to compete against challenges.

Remember than competition is not against people but unseen challenges. The evil in competition is that people give it a human face. Competition should be an internal engine navigating new paths to life’s obstacles.

Can competition itself be evil? Of course, but so can anything. Learn that competition is unavoidable. To create success, you must recognize that challenges exist whether you like it or not and that not every idea can win. To be the best means accepting only the best.
