Parents Association members enjoy multiple benefits

By McLean Hooff

The Savannah College of Art and Design Parents Association was established four years ago. Barry M. Buxton, Ph.D., vice president for institutional advancement and a SCAD parent himself, saw a need for an organization that gave the members comfort and a personal connection with the college. “The college formed the Parents Association which enables parents, sometimes located far away from Savannah, to stay in touch, informed and involved with college activities and academic programs,” said Buxton.

The Parents Association keeps parents informed and involved with the SCAD community through e-mail updates and other forms of communication.

Parents may join the Parents Association by paying membership dues of $50 for one academic year or $125 for a lifetime membership. Members enjoy many benefits as members such as special discounts at SCAD Travel, Ex Libris, Gryphon Tea Room and any other SCAD auxiliary services; monthly e-mails with updates about academics and campus life; and a 50-percent discount on one-year subscriptions to The Chronicle. Parents Association members also receive a welcome kit including a membership card, automobile decal, mouse pad, listing of important campus phone numbers and additional “proud parent” items. Other benefits include member updates about events on campus, including media and performing arts productions; annual festivals and athletic events; “proud parent” merchandise available only through the Parents Association including T-shirts and mugs; as well as bakery item delivery service allowing members to surprise their students with cakes, brownies or cookies on special occasions.

In addition, Parents Association members have a designated contact person whom they can call or e-mail for information or to ask a question. This direct contact is perhaps one of the biggest values to being a Parents Association member.

For more information regarding the Parents Association, look for the Parents Association brochure in this edition of The Chronicle or contact the institutional advancement office at 525-5850 or development@scad.edu.
