Urbanscape and humanscape lecture slated for March 1 SCADs department of architecture and the Earle W. Newton Center for British-American Studies are hosting a joint presentation of student design projects for a site at Gabriels Wharf on the Thames River in London. The works examine urban and architectural design concepts that relate to the existing texture and layers of the city and create proposals for technological, sustainable and human environments. SCAD hosts Fulbright workshop SCAD will host a free workshop for all area college and university professors who are interested in a Fulbright Scholar grant, March 5, 2-3:30 p.m., in Alexander Hall Auditorium, 668 Indian St. The workshop will be conducted by Richard Petit, senior program officer for the Council for International Exchange of Scholars, which administers the Fulbright Scholar program. Beat the rush; sign up early for college housing Students who are interested in living in the residence halls for the 2004-2005 academic year can sign up early for college housing. The residence life and housing department offers many options including Living Learning Communities and the new residence hall, Boundary Village, scheduled to open fall 2004. Students who take advantage of early fall sign-up days can choose their room assignment. Just pay the $250 reservation fee by March 24, pay the balance by July 1, and attend the appropriate sign-up session. Early fall sign-up is considered on a first-come, first-assigned basis. Requested rooms are assigned if the housing balance is paid by July 1, and if the room is available. Students who request rooms in an area that is changing to a Living Learning Community must agree to participate in that area during the 2004-2005 academic year, even if the student currently resides in the room he/she is requesting. Students who wish to be roommates should sign up together. Students who miss the designated sign-up time may attend a later session. Students who are not able to attend during the scheduled times should call Brad Knapp at 525-7000. On March 26, the sign-up drive will be held in the Dyson House computer lab. The schedule is as follows: 9-10:30 a.m. Students may sign up to live in their current rooms. 10:30 a.m. - Noon Current sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students may sign up for a different room in their current building. 1-5 p.m. All students may sign-up for a different room in their current buildings. Another sign-up drive will be held April 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Dyson Computer Lab. At this drive, students may sign up for a room in any building. Scholarship deadline approaches Each year, SCAD offers numerous scholarships to current students. Applications are available each year beginning Sept. 1 and are due to the office of institutional advancement by April 1. More than 30 scholarships will be awarded this spring for the 2004-2005 academic year to students who have shown high academic merit or artistic ability, demonstrate financial need or possess other notable talents or attributes. This year, scholarship awards range from $16,000 to $500. Scholarship applications require a completed application along with an official SCAD transcript and two faculty recommendations. Commencement not mandatory for faculty Although commencement is the most important day of the college year and students love to see their favorite faculty at the ceremony, participation in commencement this year is optional for faculty members, because of an increased number of graduating students and limited seating on the Savannah Civic Center arena floor. Faculty members who have already submitted cap and gown orders to Herff Jones, please contact Stephanie Orne in the events and conferencing office at 525-5518 to verify attendance or to cancel orders. For those faculty members who have not sent in an order form, please note that faculty members submitting an order are also confirming their participation in commencement. Faculty who do not submit an order will be considered non-participants, and neither seating nor a cap and gown will be reserved. La Galerie Bleue issues call for entries Monitor Madness, an exhibition that will be on display at La Galerie Bleue April 30 - June 1, is seeking work from students, faculty and alumni. All types of digital artwork will be considered. Examples of eligible artwork are motion graphics, digital slide shows, short films, 3-D animation, flash animation, experimental computer art, broadcast design and CAD drawings/architectural presentations. Work for consideration must be submitted on VHS, DVD, CD or accessible online. Selected work must be delivered as high-resolution files to Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St., by April 9. This change to the previously announced commencement date of May 29 was conveyed to the college community on Oct. 16 and reflects a nine-week quarter. To ensure that there is no loss of class time, representatives of the academic services department scheduled four Fridays April 2, 16, 30 and May 14 as make-up class days, and has confirmed the following schedule for each Friday: Friday, April 2, is the make-up day for Monday, May 24 Friday, April 16 is the make-up day for Tuesday, May 25 Friday, April 30 is the make-up day for Wednesday, May 26 Friday, May 14 is the make-up day for Thursday, May 27 For more information, faculty members should contact the chairs of their departments. Students with questions about specific classes should contact their professors. Newton center seeks work for competition The museum of the Earle W. Newton Center for British-American Studies invites SCAD students, alumni, faculty and staff to participate in a juried competition for the summer exhibition in the Newton Center Museums Focus Gallery titled Contemporary Focus: Mirroring the Creative Self, July 1 - Sept. 30. Advertising image contest announced The SCAD health and wellness department invites all SCAD students to create an image to advertise the Prevention Party, a celebration of diversity among students, featuring food and music and an exhibition promoting the prevention of HIV, unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases. The party will be held May 8 at Orleans Hall, 7:30-10 p.m. The competition is open to all currently enrolled students. Awards include a $100 cash award for the winning entry and a $50 Ex Libris certificate for the runner-up. Students may enter up to three pieces of work. The original size must not be greater than 9-by-12 inches. The images can be produced in any media of two-dimensional art, but images on disks must accompany prints from images on computer programs. Submit entries to Jamie Scholten, fourth floor of American Hall. Be sure all submissions are identified with the artists name and telephone number on back. Also, please include a form that is available by e-mailing wellness@scad.edu or calling 525-6971. The entry deadline is Feb. 26 at 5 p.m. Student exchange program accepting applications The French Heritage Society, formerly Friends of Vieilles Maisons Francaise, Inc., offers student exchange programs that have enriched the cross-cultural experiences of both French and American students by permitting them to work on sites of historic interest in each others countries. The programs mix the practical with the personal by giving students in both cultures the opportunity to live with and interact with their host families. Participants spend three weeks with a French family in a land-marked house, chateau or house with a sculpture garden during the summer months. Internship opportunities include acting as an English speaking guide for chateau tours, working in a chateau library, restoration work (paintings, sculpture), horticulture and botanical work (garden maintenance) and architectural and/or botanical research In exchange, the host family provides room and board and allows the participant to share in family life and shows interesting sites in the area. The program is open to students 20 to 26 years of age in any academic field. The ability to speak and read French is beneficial, and may be required depending on the project. There is a nonrefundable $15 fee to join FHS in order to participate in this program. To apply, provide a résumé, photo, motivation letter, a letter of recommendation from a professor, and be available to be interviewed by phone. Please indicate the preferred period of summer (July/August). Usually, a three-week internship is ideal. Proof of health insurance is required. Transportation and all other expenses are paid by the student. The application deadline is April 30. Health and wellness department issues call for entries The Savannah College of Art and Design health and wellness department invites all students, faculty, staff and members of the Savannah community to submit work for the first annual Prevention Party, a celebration of diversity among students. The party will feature food and music. There will be artwork focusing on the prevention of HIV, unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. The party will be held May 8, 7:30-10 p.m., at Orleans Hall. The exhibition and related activities are a product of collaboration between the health and wellness department, LAMBDA and CULTURA student organizations, SCAD residence life department, Memorial Student Health Clinic, First City Network, Latin American Services Organization, Chatham County Health Department, Planned Parenthood, My Brothaz Home, and Project Azuka. The entries may be used on a regional or national basis to promote the HIV/STD prevention message. Interested artists should submit work according to the following guidelines: Each artist may submit up to three pieces for consideration. Work in any two- and three-dimensional media is welcome. All work must be professionally presented. All two-dimensional work must be professionally framed and ready to hang, equipped with screw eyes and wire or other appropriate hanging materials. Work may not exceed 60 inches in any direction. Submissions are not required to reflect students major. All artist submissions must relate to the specific goals of increasing the awareness of risk behaviors. In order to adequately prepare/develop their submissions, artists are encouraged to visit the Center For Disease Control Website at http://www.cdc.gov/ or call the health and wellness department at 525-6971 for HIV/STD prevention educational materials. Artists should also submit a brief artist statement with their submission (no longer than 200 words) that addresses either their personal reactions to participating in this prevention event or HIV/STD prevention in general. Special installation needs or equipment requirements must be submitted in writing along with the work. Please include diagrams if necessary. Film/video or animation submissions must be no longer than 14 minutes and must be submitted in VCR and DVD format. As exhibition space is limited, all submissions undergo a selection process. The name of the specific competition (see below) must be on the work. Work must be dropped off to American Hall, fourth floor, Room 413, May 3, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the only date that work will be accepted for exhibition. No late entries will be considered. First prize in the 2-D/3-D Competition is $400; second prize is $200; and third prize is $150 (grant funded by the Savannah Foundation and the American College Health Association in partnership with the health and wellness department). First prize in the Film/Video/Animation Competition is $700; second prize is $350; and third prize is $250 (grant funded by The American College Health Association in partnership with the health and wellness department). A $100 first prize will be given for the winning Artists Statement; $50 will be awarded for the statement that received honorable mention. For more information, Please call 525-6971 or e-mail wellness@scad.edu AV scholarships now available The International Communications Industries Association, Inc.®, premier trade association for the professional audiovisual communications industry, has announced the availability of $60,000 in scholarship funds for college and high-school students for the 2004/2005 academic year. This years awards are offered in amounts of $2,500 to college seniors completing bachelors degrees or students in their final year of study for associate degrees, $1,500 to dependents of employees of ICIA member companies and $500 to high school seniors. The college-level scholarships include assistance in finding paid internships, a requirement of the award. To be eligible, students must be majoring in audiovisual subjects or related fields, including audio, video, telecommunications, electronics, technical aspects of the theater, data networking, software development and information technology. Students with other majors may be considered if they can demonstrate a relationship to career goals in the AV industry. The deadline for applying for the scholarships is March 31. Award decisions will be made by a panel of AV industry leaders, based on their examination of the applications, grade point averages, work experience where applicable and letters of recommendation.
