Women’s
basketball registers two blowouts
A balanced offensive attack combined with a stifling defensive helped the Savannah College of Art and Design women’s basketball team thwart Spelman College 81-43 Feb. 2 at the Savannah Civic Center. The Bees won their second straight game from wire to wire and improved to 8-14. The Jaguars fell to 5-10. SCAD returns to action Feb. 6 with a 4 p.m. contest at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Ala. SCAD scored the game’s first eight points and never looked back in the game. Spelman, which shot 26.6 percent (17-of-64) from the floor in the game, cut the deficit to four points (10-6) with 14:33 remaining. However, SCAD out-scored the Jaguars 27-11 over the next 10 minutes as the Bees broke the game wide open. They took a 20-point lead (37-17) after two free throws by Beth Henson with 4:57 remaining. Henson finished with 12 points. SCAD led by as many as 25 points (42-17) in the first half before settling for a 44-25 lead at the half. Spelman got as close as 16 points (48-32) with 13:51 left, but the Jaguars went stone cold from the floor, shooting just 18.9 percent (7-of-37) in the final 20 minutes. The final score was the Bees’ largest lead of the game. The 43 points scored by Spelman were the fewest scored by a SCAD opponent this season. Jen Hamilton paced the SCAD attack with 14 points, while April Aguilera registered her third double-double of the season with 12 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Four players scored in double figures as SCAD easily defeated Rust College 75-56 Jan. 31 at Savannah High School. The Bees never trailed in the game. Rust got within two points (20-18) with 9:35 remaining in the first half. SCAD blew open the game with a 16-1 run over the next six minutes to take a 36-19 lead on a jumper by freshman Rachel Hennon, who scored seven points for the Bees during the decisive run. Hennon, who went 7-of-9 from the floor, led the Bees with a career-high 16 points. The Bees led by 12 points (36-24) at the half and by as many as 21 points (59-38) in the second half. Henson also finished with 16 points for the Bees. She added nine rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots. Aguilera and Kerise Delcoure each finished in double figures with 12 points. Aguilera also registered her second double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds. Hamilton only scored four points for the Bees, but she dished out nine assists and registered five steals.
