Citizen Kaine
Savannah College of Art and Design graphic design and computer art major Kaine Osita Asika debuts his first solo show in Savannah with what his press release referred to as “the self-confidence and poise of a seasoned veteran.” “Collective Works 2004” is a powerful and emotionally driven grouping of oil paintings, watercolors and ink drawings, “each transcending the reality of the artist.” Before coming to SCAD, Asika studied as a teenager under nationally acclaimed painter of Trinidad, Leroy Clark. Living in Trinidad without electricity, waking at 5 a.m. to paint, Asika honed the skills that eventually produced the 45-plus original pieces that are on display and for sale at the Starland Center for Contemporary Arts Feb. 6-8. After completion of coursework in March, Asika plans to relocate to New York. “Collective Works 2004” is on display Feb. 6-8 at the Starland Center for Contemporary Arts, 2424 Bull St. A reception will be held Feb. 6, 6-8 p.m. Local artist brings ‘Panthertown’ to Savannah Laura Adams is no stranger to the Savannah art scene. Her work has been featured in numerous juried exhibitions at the Telfair Museum and throughout the South. Her most recent exhibition, “Panthertown: Inter-pretations of a Southern Rainforest Paper Collage,” focuses on a wild valley in the North Carolina mountains where panthers once roamed. Near the Tuckasegee River, the valley is known fittingly as Panthertown. To many species, this valley remains a sanctuary, and Adams delicately and dutifully brings this wilderness to life by layering bold colors of cut papers to create a three-dimensional view of Panthertown. “Panthertown: Interpretations of a Southern Rainforest Paper Collage” is on display through Feb. 27 at The StarLander CoffeeHouse and Gallery. |
