Savannah College of Art and Design students Tracy Hildebrand, Eric Vergne and Franyel Zelaya were named as semifinalists in the 2004 Berkeley Prize Competition. Only 25 semifinalists were chosen out of the 101 entries from architecture students from 28 countries including Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Greece, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, Spain, Uruguay and the United States. In Stage Two of the competition, the semifinalists will write a 2,500-word essay in which they develop the idea proposed in State One. The topic of the competition is a city’s displaced population and those who assist them. The competition asks entrants to make recommendations for bettering the situations of those displaced people and write about their discoveries in the form of a persuasive article for an influential community newspaper. The top five to seven essays will be selected for final judging by the Berkeley Prize Jury. For more information about the prize, visit www.berkeleyprize.org/2004/intro.cfm.
