| Faculty and staff learn grant-writing tips By Suzanne Savage Savannah College of Art and Design faculty and staff from across the campus gathered at the Jen Library Nov. 15 to learn more about how to apply for grant funding. Twenty-two representatives from departments as diverse as computer art, photography, residence life and health and wellness participated in a grant development workshop presented by the office of institutional advancement in conjunction with the colleges writing center. Helen Tygret, manager of grant development, shared information about institutional protocol for grants, how to identify funders, and how to prepare grant applications for submission. Tygret has a masters degree in nonprofit management and was the manager of grant development for the community college system of Indiana before coming to SCAD in September. Workshop participants had the opportunity to test online resources for identifying potential funders, learned about commonly required proposal components, and had the opportunity to ask questions about the grant development process. "It was an informative workshop that really got me motivated and educated about grant writing," said Carol Miller, residence life coordinator. "In the past year, faculty and staff have had significant success with grant awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the J. Paul Getty Trust," said Barry M. Buxton, Ph.D., vice president for institutional advancement. "We are offering grant development workshops to give faculty and staff the tools they need to access additional resources through grant funding." The office of institutional advancement is responsible for all fund-raising activities for the college. All grant proposals and applications for external funding are routed through institutional advancement to ensure that the best possible proposals are submitted and that there is no duplication of submissions across the college. Because of an overwhelming response to the first workshop, an additional workshop has been scheduled for Dec. 13, 10 a.m. to noon, in Jen Library room 108. Additional workshops will be scheduled as requested. For information or assistance with grant submissions, contact Helen Tygret at 525-5870 or htygret@scad.edu. Savage is director of development. |
