
Product/industrial design professor Tom Gattis accepts an International Composites Design Competition award on behalf of the marine design project students from Caroline Bailli, Ph.D. director of the UK Center for Materials Education, one of the sponsors of the competition. Other sponsors included Composites on Tour, The Flanders Institute for Small and Medium Enterprises, European Science & Technology Week, TU Delft, and Katholjeke University Lueven. The ceremony were held in the VIZO Gallery in Brussels, Belgium, Nov. 7. More than 300 professional educators and students were present. The SCAD Original Concept Boat project was was one of five student/non-professional projects chosen for awards and inclusion in the exhibition.
Furniture design alumnus Paul Troy (B.F.A. 2001) is exhibiting his work in a solo show at comfort, a new restaurant in Richmond, Va. Titled "interiors/exteriors," the show consists of approximately 25 pieces of Troys explorations in digital art. The show is on display through Jan. 1 at the restaurant located at 200 W. "Theres a distinct opportunity for both the restaurant and myself," Troy said. "In essence, we are both introducing ourselves to Richmond."
As of Oct. 31, 341 SCAD faculty and staff had given donations totalling $93,116 during the 2002/2003 fiscal year. That number represents 33.5 percent of employees. Giving is up from last year; through Oct. 31, 2001, 203 donors had made gifts totaling $43,052. Of the total number of donors, 162 are first-time donors to the campaign. Donors who gave last year and renewed their gift this year have increased the amount of their gift by an average of 75 percent.
Alumnus Wayne Moore, staff photographer in the campus photography department, won the campaigns grand prize drawing. As the winner, Moore will receive a gift certificate for a complimentary two-night stay at the King and Prince Beach and Golf Resort on St. Simons Island.
The work of computer art alumnus Pedro Betancourt (B.F.A. 2002) was published in the November edition of Computer Graphics World. Betancourt is a motion graphics designer for Inhance Digital Corporation, a company based in San Jose, Calif., that combines the latest technology from film, visual effects and gaming industries to create award-winning marketing campaigns.
Len Cripe, managing director of The Savannah Film and Video Festival, was named to Georgia Trend magazines 40 Under 40 list in the October 2002 issue.
The 40 Under 40 list is comprised of young Georgians under the age of 40 who are making a difference in Georgia. The 2002 list includes people from a variety of fields, from entrepreneurs and innovators to artists and public servants. The recipients were invited to an awards ceremony and reception honoring their distinction, Oct. 14 at the Fox Theater in Atlanta.
Cripe also was named to the January 2001 Business Report and Journals 40 Under 40 list.
The fashion department has been invited by the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc., to participate in its fifth annual Target/CFDA Design Initiative. This prestigious design competition is offered to selected colleges nationally and invites eligible fashion seniors to submit portfolio standard work in either mens, womens or childrens wear categories. Prizes include cash amounts, internship opportunities and the offer of employment with Target Stores at their headquarters in Minneapolis, Minn.
Foundation studies professor Tommy Fitzpatricks paintings will be featured in the most recent edition of New American Paintings, Vol. 42. In conjunction with the publication, his work was also selected for a show in Boston at 056 Gallery, which opened Oct. 12.
Product design professor Tom Gattis presented a paper at the IDSA conference in California titled "The Large Design Project: Beyond Traditional Education," which been selected to be printed in the winter issue of Innovation Magazine.
Sequential art alumnus John Griffin (B.F.A. 2002) was selected to illustrate a comic history of the middle ages, written by Dr. Richard Kay.
Graphic design graduate student Reginald Hankerson won the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament poster contest and received a $500 scholarship sponsored by the tournament. The winner was announced during a ceremony held Nov. 15 at The Club at Savannah Harbor. An exhibition showcasing selected entries also was held prior to the ceremony. Contest entries will be displayed at the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport during the month of April.
The poster contest was held in conjunction with the Champions Tour, formerly the Senior PGA Tour, which will host the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf Tournament at The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort and Spa, April 21-27. Hankersons winning entry will serve as the official Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf promotional poster and will be displayed in all tournament ticket outlets, area golf pro shops and retail stores.
Finalists included Amy Coleman, Patricia Coughlin, Ted Coyle, Jamie Guth, Sarah Ortiz (two entries), Jeffery Smith, Jaclyn Vergara and Marcus Waltermark. The finalists will receive Season Tickets to the tournament, as well as a tournament shirt and hat.
"This is a special opportunity for the tournament to partner with one of the finest art institutions in the world," said Tim Iley, executive director of Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf. "The poster we have chosen is a wonderful reflection of the tournament and gives us a truly unique marketing tool for 2003."
All Savannah College of Art and Design undergraduate and graduate students were invited to participate in the poster contest. The posters were judged based on creativity, originality and the use of some required elements.
The panel of judges included representatives from Atlanta Gas Light, City Market, City of Savannah, Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, Liberty Mutual Group, Robertson & Markowitz Advertising and Public Relations, Inc., Savannah College of Art and Design, St. Josephs/Candler Health Systems and The Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa.

Four pieces by professor Denise Falk and two pieces by Michael Brown also were exhibited.
Films by video/film students Jason Howe, Craig Oelrich, Darren Roberts, Edward Mensore and Angela Payne were shown in the student showcase of the 2002 Savannah Film and Video Festival. Mensores film "Will Kill Will" also has been accepted to the 2002 Hollywood Underground Film Festival.
Illustration alumna Aya KaKeda (B.F.A. 2000) was selected by Print magazine as one of the up-and-coming illustrators nationally.
Illustration professor Dick Krepel has completed a cover illustration and two inside illustrations for Thomsons Financial Report magazine.
