OBrien earns all-region honors at cross country regionals By Michael MacEachern The Savannah College of Art and Designs Beth OBrien earned All-Region honors Nov. 16 at the 2002 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Cross Country Regionals hosted by Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. OBrien, who became the third female SCAD runner to earn all-region honors in the four-year history of the program, finished 15th in the womens 5K course at John L. Pratt Park with a time of 23:26.09 as the Bees finished tied for 10th place out of 27 teams that competed with 165 points. Kendra Baird finished in 30th with a time of 24:05.02 while teammate Erica Gajewski finished 64th (25:23.09). Megan McSweeney finished 82nd (26:22.08) followed by Sara Keel (86th, 26:27.09), Lee Harlowe (109th, 27:26.08) and Briana Mazzio (115th, 27:47.08). In the mens 8K race, SCAD did not score as they only had four runners compete in the 23-team field. Garrett Johnson was the top runner for the Bees with a time of 29:55.00 while David Adams finished 107th with a time of 30:24.05. Logan Petree finished 120th (31:53.01) and Peter Hightower, who shaved over a minute off his personal best time, finished in 124th (32:17.06). Volleyball defeated in tournament semifinals Emory swept past the SCAD volleyball team 30-23, 30-15, and 30-27 Nov. 15 in the semifinals of the 2002 NCAA Division III South Regional Tournament on the Emory campus in Atlanta. Emory, the No. 2 seeded team in the regional and ranked No. 7 in the latest AVCA Division III Coaches Top 25 poll, defeated the Bees for the third time this season and improved to 33-8. The Bees, who have made the tournament six of the past seven seasons, ended their 2002 season at 23-13. Senior Kim Edwards led the Bees with 10 kills, five digs and two blocks while Lindsey Butterworth added 10 digs. Cameron Goldsmith contributed five kills, five aces and three blocks for SCAD while Ally Schramer added 20 assists. SCAD advanced to the semifinals by upsetting East Texas Baptist University 30-24, 21-30, 31-29, and 30-21 in the first round Nov. 14. Edwards led SCAD with 20 kills, 11 digs and four blocks while Butterworth added 21 digs and seven kills. Goldsmith led the Bees with four blocks and Emily Avery added 12 digs, three blocks and three kills. Erin Sanders added seven kills for the Bees while Schramer contributed 35 assists and four kills. Emory edges womens soccer in first round of playoffs Emory scored two goals in the first half and held on in the second half to defeat SCAD 2-1 in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Division III Womens Soccer Championship Nov. 13 on the Emory campus in Atlanta. The Eagles, who had beaten SCAD 7-0 Nov. 9, improved to 14-3-2. The Bees ended the 2002 campaign at 9-10-1. Emory took a 1-0 lead on Jenna Kereiakess goal at the 18:13 mark. The Eagles, who outshot the Bees 20-5, added an insurance goal in the waning minutes of the first half. Lauren Hudaks goal from 25 yards out that went over SCAD goalkeeper Emily Boharts head gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at the 41:35 mark. SCAD came out on the offensive at the start of the second half and cut the margin to 2-1 on Lindy Krakowiaks penalty kick at the 50:02 mark after a SCAD player was taken down inside the box. It was Krakowiaks 10th goal of the season. Emory goalkeeper Amy Franciscovich finished with three saves while Bohart tallied nine. This was the third appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament for the Bees in the past four years and the second time the Bees have faced Emory in the playoffs. Avery and Edwards named to academic all-district team Emily Avery and Kim Edwards have been named to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District III College Division volleyball teams. Avery was named to the first team, while Edwards was named to the third team. The members of the College Sports Information Directors of America selected the teams and the six first-team members will now be considered for Academic All-America® honors. The District III College Division consists of all-non NCAA Division I colleges and universities in Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina and Virginia. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and must be a starter or a significant reserve on her team. Avery, a 6-foot senior right-side/outside hitter from Bozeman, Mont., is second on the team this season in blocks (93), and third in hitting percentage (.243), kills (162), and digs (206). Avery was named to the all-tournament team at the Rams Invitational this season at the State University of New York at Farmingdale. Avery has a 4.0 grade point average as a graphic design major. Edwards, a 5-11 senior outside hitter from Statesville, N.C., led the team this season in kills (392), and is second on the team in kill percentage (.259), aces (58), and digs (222). Edwards, who was named to the all-tournament team at the Guilford College Invitational, became the schools second player to have at least 1,000 kills in her career. Edwards is also the first SCAD player to have over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Edwards, who has 3.7 grade point average as an interior design major, has 1,058 kills and 1,174 digs so far in her career. |
