
Historic preservation department chair Hector Abreu and historic preservation students participating in the Rent-A-Preservationist program were photographed by Southern Living magazine for an extensive article on the historic preservation department to appear next year. Abreu also gave a lecture titled "Historic Faux Finishes" at the Hay House in Macon for the Georgia Trust. Additionally, he was asked by the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy to serve as docent for Auldbrass Plantation Visitation Day Oct. 13. The plantation is one of only two such structures in the Southeast.
Fashion professor Marie Aja-Herrera has been nominated to the board of the American Biographical Institute.
Interior design students who presented renovation projects to some residents of The Landings during winter quarter 2002 were invited back on Oct. 24 to discuss their projects for their redevelopment program. Participating students were: Stephanie Cheatley, Stephanie Dunbar, Sujey Guzman, Summer Kammerzell, Elizabeth Karcher, Katherine LeMasurier, Jodi Lundin, William McGovern, Adrienne Wood, Meghan Hanley, Kim Edwards and Hailey Taylor.
Sequential art alumnus Brandon Badeaux (B.F.A. 2001) drew "Man of Steel" for DC Comics, on stands now.
Illustration alumna Lana Crooks (B.F.A. 2002) had two illustrations published in Edward Ka-spe, "Love" and "Colours," a limited edition run of 2,300 copies published by de la Tour Saint Rapunze Publishing.
Illustration students in professor Mohamed Danawis poster design class are working with the health and wellness department and the Chatham/Effingham Tobacco Use Prevention Program on creating a series of posters on the prevention of tobacco, second hand smoking and spit tobacco. Danawi also was asked by American Illustration to write a commentary to be printed on the flap of the upcoming American Illustration Annual.
Liberal arts professor Mary Doll recently presented two papers at a conference sponsored by The Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, which took place in Dayton, Ohio from Oct. 24-26. One was "Forgiveness," a chapter in a book co-written by two other professors on how curriculum issues impact public and private lives. Her other presentation, "Portraits of Anti-Semites," was from a chapter in a recently published book, "Difficult Memories: Reflections in the Post-Holocaust Era." Her paper "Language, Knowledge and Agency in Postcolonial African Writing" also will be published in the Journal of Curriculum Theorizing, Vol. 18, No. 4.
Painting professor Craig Drennen attended the Southeastern College Art Conference, Oct. 23-27, and chaired a panel on the topic "Teaching and the Avant Garde."
Painting alumna Heidi Guibord (M.F.A. 2001) will work with Americorps to complete a mural through the Oakland California Unified School District. She has a studio in the Fruitvale Artists District and is exhibiting in Jack London Square through Artship, a community initiative committed to developing a creative arts and cultural education center at the Oakland, Calif., waterfront.
