Swim team hosts pentathlon

The men’s and women’s swimming teams held an intrasquad pentathlon Oct. 18 at the Chatham County Aquatic Center as they prepare for their inaugural season.

In the pentathlon, each swimmer swam 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard butterfly, and 50-yard freestyle. The objective for each swimmer was to swim the fastest cumulative time in the five events.

The top female finisher was Laine Benthall with a time of 6:08.08 in the five events. Benthall was the top finisher for women in each of the five events. On the men’s side, Andrew Perez had the best time of 5:52.16. Perez had the top time in three of the five events.

Both teams start the inaugural varsity season Nov. 1 in Wingate, N.C., when the Bees will take on Wingate University and Randolph-Macon College in a 2 p.m. tri-match.


Equestrian program wins horse show
The Savannah College of Art and Design equestrian program started the 2003-04 season off on the right foot by winning the Georgia Southern University Intercollegiate Horse Show Oct. 18 at Evermore Farms in Brooklet.

The Bees won the show with a total of 44 points, 13 more than host Georgia Southern. Florida State University was third with 23 points, followed by the University of Florida (22) and College of Charleston (19). Other teams competing were the University of Miami, Emory University, Georgia Tech, Georgia State University and Wesleyan College.

Jordan Siegel won both the Open Flat and Fences competitions, and Jessica Brown won another section of Open Flat and Intermediate Fences to be named the Co-High Point Riders of the show.

SCAD riders dominated the flat classes. Ashley Kelly won the third section of Open Flat, Hattie Saltonstall was second and Annie Connolly was third. Jessie Lambert and Haley Hall won the two sections of Intermediate Flat. Karen Carter was second in Novice Flat and Larissa Carpenter finished fourth.

Rissy Fiora and Thea Lassen each won a section of Advanced Walk-Trot-Canter, while Lauren Reynolds won the Walk-Trot competition.

In the fences categories, Siegel won Open Fences, Brown won Intermediate Fences and Karen Carter finished third in Novice Fences.

SCAD returns to action Nov. 22 when they travel to Charleston, S.C., for the College of Charleston Horse Show at Storybook Farms.


Women’s soccer claims two victories
The women’s soccer team continued their offensive and defensive dominance over the opposition Oct. 17-18 in Montgomery, Ala.

The Bees leveled their record at 5-5-1 with a 5-0 shutout over Millsaps College on the campus of Huntingdon College Oct. 18 after defeating Huntingdon 6-1 a day earlier.

SCAD has not lost in its last five matches (4-0-1) while registering four shutouts. During the unbeaten streak, the SCAD offense awoke from its early-season slumber as they have outscored the opposition 19-1. Prior to the unbeaten streak, their opponents had outscored the Bees 22-8.

Laura Vaughn, who has a team-leading eight goals, scored the first two goals for the Bees against Millsaps. Lissa Evans, who has scored three goals in the past two matches, and senior defender Nancy Disk scored to give the Bees a 4-0 halftime lead. It was Disk’s first collegiate goal.

Lauren Ford closed out the scoring for SCAD with her third goal of the season in the second half.

SCAD returns to action with a 5 p.m. match at LaGrange College in LaGrange Oct. 24.

Huntingdon took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Jessica Veseskis in the 10th minute of the match. It was the first goal allowed by the Bees since a 4-0 loss Sept. 21 at Thomas University.

It didn’t take long for the Bees, who hadn’t played a match in nearly two weeks, to strike back.

Vaughn tied the match at one point three minutes later. Camille Chu gave SCAD the lead for good at 2-1 with her second goal of the season in the 31st minute.

SCAD broke open the match with four goals in the second half. Evans scored the first of her two goals in the match just 64 seconds into the second half to give the Bees a 3-1 lead. Maureen Howard and Lindy Krakowiak scored the other goals for SCAD.


Embry-Riddle sweeps past volleyball team
Embry-Riddle Aero-nautical University swept the volleyball team 30-25, 30-18 and 30-17 in a key NAIA Region XIV match before a standing-room only crowd Oct. 17 at the St. Paul’s Activity Center.

The Eagles, who are ranked No. 2 in the region, snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 17-7. The Bees, who are ranked No. 4 in the region, dropped their second consecutive match and fell to 20-13.

SCAD returns to action Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at the Trinity National Invitational Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. The Bees will play four of the top 11 teams in NCAA Division III at the tournament.

Emily Bumby and Lindsey Thorne paced the offense for the Bees with eight kills each. Lindsey Butterworth contributed 10 digs and five kills. Bryn Tofte led SCAD with 16 assists and Ally Schramer added 10.


Men’s soccer loses to NCAA Division II colleges
The Clayton College & State University men’s soccer team scored twice in the first 11 minutes of the match as they defeated SCAD Oct. 19 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex.

The Lakers, who are members of the NCAA Division II’s Peach Belt Conference, won their third consecutive match to improve to 8-4-1. The Bees, who fell to 1-11-0, return to action Oct. 24 when they travel to LaGrange for 7:30 p.m. match against LaGrange.

Clayton State took a 1-0 lead at the 8:21 mark as they scored an own goal. The goal came when a SCAD defender tried to clear the ball out of the box and it deflected off another SCAD player and into the left corner of the goal.

The Lakers made it 2-0 less than three minutes later.

The Bees’ best opportunity for a score came with just under 15 minutes remaining in the match when Justin Wolocko’s shot hit the crossbar. Clayton State, which outshot the Bees 16-14, added an insurance goal with 2:43 left in the match.

SCAD goalkeeper Sam Wolfgram stopped seven shots.

University of North Florida outshot SCAD 31-6 in SCAD’s 4-0 loss Oct. 17 in Jacksonville, Fla. SCAD goalkeeper Sam Wolfgram helped keep the Bees in the contest with eight saves.
