Volleyball survives tough weekend at Emory

The Savannah College of Art and Design volleyball team dropped all four matches Sept. 19-20 at the Emory Invitational in Atlanta.

Southwestern University, which is ranked No. 16 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association’s NCAA Division III Top 25 poll, defeated SCAD in the first match Sept. 19 22-30, 30-28, 30-22 and 30-17. The Bees also lost to Thomas More College 30-25, 30-28 and 30-15.

The Bees won their first two games against Texas Lutheran University 30-27 and 30-21 before the Bulldogs rallied to take the final three games — 30-16, 30-25 and 15-9, Sept. 20. In the final match of the Invitational, host Emory University defeated SCAD 30-23, 30-23, 23-30 and 30-24. Emory is ranked No. 11 in the latest AVCA’s NCAA Division III Top 25 poll.

SCAD fell to 7-11. The Bees return to action Sept. 26-27 when they compete at the Coca Cola LaGrange Invitational in LaGrange. SCAD will play Faulkner University, Dillard University and Brewton-Parker College at the Invitational.

Emily Bumby led the Bees with 15 kills and 15 digs against Southwestern. Lindsey Butterworth added 14 digs and chipped in six kills. Dina Lamanna led the Bees with 26 digs while Ally Schramer added 26 assists. Bryn Tofte added 13 assists, nine digs and four aces.

Against Thomas More, Nicole Moody led the Bees with 10 kills while Nicole Crnich added nine. Butterworth contributed 17 digs and added seven kills. Schramer and Tofte each tallied 14 assists.

Crnich paced the Bees against Texas Lutheran with 13 kills and five blocks. Bumby contributed 11 kills and 17 digs while Lamanna added 19 digs. Butterworth led the Bees with 24 digs and added seven kills. Schramer led the setters with 21 assists while Tofte added 18. Moody led SCAD with seven aces and added nine kills while Cameron Goldsmith added five blocks.

Bumby led SCAD against Emory with 13 kills and 15 digs. Butterworth also tallied 15 digs and added eight kills. Schramer added 21 assists while Tofte added 11. Schramer and Lamanna also added nine digs.


Cross country competes at Georgia invitational
The men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the Georgia State Invitational Sept. 20 in Panthersville. The women’s team finished eighth while the men finished 10th.

The women’s team finished the 5K course on the grounds of Georgia Memorial Hospital with a score of 231 points. The race was won by Kennesaw State University. The men’s team finished the 8K layout with 286 points. The University of Alabama at Huntsville won the men’s race.

Jamie Manner was the top female finisher for the Bees with a 47th-place finish with a time of 20:25. Erica Gajewski finished in 80th place with a time of 21:39 followed by Kendra Baird’s time of 22:08, good for 85th place.

Elizabeth Adams led the other SCAD runners in 112th place with a time of 23:50 followed by Sara Keel (115th, 24:03), Melia Harrison (127th, 25:33), Christine Doolittle (131st, 27:20) and Betty Sue Rollins (133rd, 28:14).

In the men’s race, Garrett Johnson was the top SCAD runner in 73rd place with a time of 24:14 followed by Andrew Wagner in 104th place with a time of 30:57. Justin Coombs finished in 111th place (32:26), followed by Eric Pedersen (113th, 33:35), David Adams (116th, 34:10), Joel McMullen (119th, 35:34) and Logan Petree (122nd, 36:24).

Both teams return to action Sept. 27 at The Citadel Invitational in Charleston, S.C., at 9 a.m.


Women’s soccer suffers loss at Thomas
The Thomas University women’s soccer team defeated SCAD 4-0 Sept. 21 in Thomasville.

The Night Hawks, who are ranked 13th in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, improve to 6-2-1. SCAD fell to 1-5. The Bees will open the home portion of their schedule when they face North Carolina Wesleyan College in a 12:30 p.m. match Sept. 27 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. SCAD will also face Methodist College in a 1 p.m. match Sept. 28 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex.

Thomas built a 2-0 lead at the half on goals from Emer McAuley and Susan Maxwell. In the second half, McAuley scored her second and then Maxwell capped off the scoring, converting a penalty kick late in the match.

Claire McCombe, Ashley Dodd and Heather Roddenberry each picked up an assist. Thora Rognvaldsdottir recorded the shut out in goal, while Lisa Gallant made 15 saves for SCAD. The Night Hawks out shot SCAD 27-3.


Men’s soccer opens home season
The men’s soccer team returns to action with a home game Sept. 27 after having Sept. 19’s match at Chowan College postponed because of Hurricane Isabel.

The Bees, who are 1-5 on the season, will host Methodist in a 2:30 p.m. match at the Chatham County Soccer Complex. SCAD will also face Emory in a 3 p.m. match Sept. 28 at the Chatham County Soccer Complex.


Club SCAD announces class schedule
Sam Carter, manager of Club SCAD announced several classes will be taught at Club SCAD during fall quarter.

Group exercise (aerobics) will be held Mondays and Thursday at 6 p.m. while yoga will be held Wednesdays at 6 p.m. A kickboxing class will also be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.

Each class will have a different instructor and the fees of the class will be set by the instructor. All participants must purchase their own materials. If you have any questions, please call Club SCAD at 525-6001.
